2016 RYDER CUP BETTING PREVIEW
Europe have dominated the Ryder Cup for the last two decades. Having won six of the last seven biennial contest (including the last three) you would expect Europe to be favourites but the Americans are. The European team includes six debutants this year - Chris Wood, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Andy Sullivan, Thomas Pieters, Rafa Cabrera-Bello and the Masters champ, Danny Willett. Re-balancing the squad are six seasoned professionals in the form of Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose and Martin Kaymer (all playing in their fourth Ryder Cup) while Sergio Garcia (seven previous Ryder Cups) and Lee Westwood (nine previous Ryder Cups) are the wise, old veterans.
Danny Willett has struggled a bit since winning The Masters but over the past few weeks has returned to some kind of form. Chris Wood, Matthew Fitzpatrick and Andy Sullivan have all seen a glimmer of form in their recent outings but Thomas Pieters and Rafa Cabrera Bello have both had good season.
US team has two debutants. Ryan Moore played superbly at the weekend while Brooks Koepka’s form has dipped over his last three outings. Dustin Johnson is one of the top players for Team USA along with Jordan Spieth and Phil Mickelson, neither of whom have played particularly well lately. Anyway, Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth were awesome at Gleneagles two years ago and will have to replicate that at Hazeltine.
For the Americans The Wolf is chips in Patrick Reed. He went 3-0-1 in his first appearance in 2014 and had a phenomenal college career that was littered with matchplay format success. In terms of rankings, Europe has 5 of the top 12 while the USA side contains 7 of the world’s top 20. Interestingly several top players have been overlooked with Bubba Watson (7th), Paul Casey (13th) and Russell Knox (19th) being overlooked by their respective captain’s.
