US OPEN 2017 PREVIEW
The USGA have made the decision to revert to a traditional US Open venue after a few years of breaking the mould. As a consequence, the tournament will be stage at Erin Hills, 35 miles north-west of Milwaukee.
Erin Hills is a par-72 – the first US Open course since 1992 not to be a par-70 or 71 - measuring a daunting 7,741 yards, which makes it the longest test in Major championship history. The Wisconsin course is a windswept property which provides a firm playing surface that plays shorter than its length on the scorecard. The one area in which the bombers will have an advantage, is the four par 5s, which all measure over 600 yards and offer the best opportunity for scoring.
US OPEN 2017 BETTING PREVIEW: TOP CONTENDERS
DUSTIN JOHNSON, who finally broke his major duck to win at the tried and tested Oakmont Country Club last year. Since winning the US Open 12 months ago, the big American has dominated world golf, becoming a serial winner. Anyway, he has not performed particularly well since finishing second in the Wells Fargo Championship back in May. He missed the cut at The Memorial to kick off the month of June after shooting a 152 through the first two rounds. That came after previously finishing 13th and 12th in the AT&T Byron Nelson and The Players Championship, respectively.
RORY McILROY has played just 20 competitive stroke-play rounds in 2017 because of injuries and personal commitments. He was T7 at the Masters, spent two weeks working on his game in Portugal recently and was an early arrival at the course. The Northern Irishman has two T10 finish in his 8 appearances in the US Open, but he has never actually been in with a chance of winning again because his second-best position at 54 holes is T16th.
JORDAN SPIETH came out on top two years ago at Chambers Bay but his sole success came at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am back in February. He has now failed to register a top-10 finish in his last four majors and at times this season he has been shoddy. Spieth had two consecutive missed cuts at The PLAYERS AT&T Byron Nelson. He did recover with a T2 at the Dean & Deluca and a T13 at the Memorial.
JASON DAY has a fantastic US Open record without ever winning, landing five top-10s in his last six appearances. He clearly enjoys the challenge, but he has had a very disrupted season - ha has not won since the Players last May.
JUSTIN ROSE won the Olympic Gold last year and then followed up with a second place finish at The Masters. He's had a total of five top 5 finishes this season and had a decent 12th last time out at the BMW Championship and so comes into the US Open high on confidence.
Since winning his first career Major with his Masters victory in early April, SERGIO GARCIA has finished higher than 20th in only one of three tournaments. he tied for 5th in the U.S. Open a year ago .
RICKIE FOWLER, who is the fifth-most accurate driver on the PGA Tour this year, did miss the cut at the FedEx St Jude Classic last week but that followed finish second in The Memorial Tournament the week before. He has all the attributes to go well around Erin Hills and is enjoying his most consistent season, including an impressive success at the Honda Classic.
JON RAHM is probably the most upwards trending young golfer on Earth. After finishing 3rd at the Quicken Loans National on his professional debut last year, he then went on to finish 2nd at the RBC Canadian Open and earned his PGA card for 2017. He won the Farmers Insurance Open in January - and secured a top-30 finish in his first ever Masters earlier this year.
BRANDEN GRACE has finished fourth and fifth in the last two years, being right in the mix at Chambers Bay in 2015 alongside Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson and Jason Day.
SHANE LOWRY held a four-shot lead during the final round last year before fading as Dustin Johnson came through, but his form has been improving of late.
ALEXANDER NOREN produced one of the greatest final rounds in European Tour history in the valuable BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, to overcome a seven stroke deficit and win comfortably. That was his fifth victory from his last twenty two starts, which is incredible form.
BROOKS KOEPKA tied 4th in the US Open 2014 and produced solid efforts in the event in the last two years (T18 and T13). He finished 5th and 4th in the last two USPGA Championships, was tied 11th in this year's Masters and has been 10th in the Open Championship.
HIDEKI MATSUYAMA was sensational in the early part of the season, but he has not registered a top-10 since February.
Dark horses?
JASON DUFNER is coming off of a win two weeks ago at The Memorial, bringing his opening odds of 150/1 down to just 66/1 to win the tournament. In the last five US Open editions, Dufner has two Top 5’s and a Top 10 finish.
KEVIN KINSER is one of the form players on tour, landing six top-10s this season, including a recent win at the Dean & Deluca Invitational. He has a solid all-round game, but question marks remain as to whether he has the firepower to tame Erin Hills.
This year’s Texas Open winner, KEVIN CHAPPELL, who has just finished tied fourth in Memphis. His last three US Opens have seen him produce form figures reading 32-46-MC but he finished 3rd and 10th in his first two appearances in 2011 and 2012. In addition to that win in Texas, he lost a playoff at the Tour Championship last year and he was seventh in the US Masters in April.
THOMAS PIETERS played well at the Dubai Desert Classic back in February finishing T23 and followed that with a T5 at the WGC Mexico Championship and a T4 in Augusta. The big hitting Belgian is averaging just over 309 off the tee ranking 22nd in driving distance. He also ranks 11th in putting average and 21st in stroke average on the European Tour this season.
BILLY HORSCHEL comes off a recent win at The Byron Nelson and solid T4 last week in Memphis. He contended in 2013 when Justin Rose won at Merion.
