England’s last major success at a major tournament came in reaching the Semi Final in a major tournament. That was was 22 years ago now, and incidentally the man who contributed in sending the Three Lions packing is now tasked with simply getting them there.
After an injury scare to Neymar they are expected to be be frightening going forward, and with the PSG star there for the duration, hopefully, this time round they will fancy their chances.
They have a relatively easy Group to get through, and ultimately their first major test would come in the Quarter Final against potentially England or Belgium.
They could meet Germany in the Round of 16 if either side finishes second in their respective groups, which would add a huge challenge to their World Cup hopes.
A similar story to the last tournament’s hosts, they’ll have a winnable route to the Semi Final, again potentially taking on either England or Belgium in the Quarter Final.
The latter would provide one of the games of the tournament and would be a real test for the World Champions and certainly give them the confidence to go all the way once more, if they were to win.
A Semi Final is certainly not beyond question. They’re the favourites to qualify for the knockout stages in the Group C predictions and would go on to face the runner up of Group D in the Round of 16.
Didier Deschamps knows how to get to the latter stages of major tournaments. He has been there as a player and reached the Final of Euro 2016 as a manager. We expect the same again from the World Cup winning midfielder.
It’ll be the last tournament for the likes of Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique and David Silva so there is an added incentive to go all the way.
The likes of Winner sport are offering good odds on Spain to get to the semis, and we’ll certainly have a better idea of how far they can go following their opening group game against Portugal.
Jorge Sampaoli’s men are truly phenomenal going forward with the likes of Messi, Aguero and Higuain, so goals are a given.
First place in Group D is a must for Argentina if they want to avoid France in the Round of 16. From their it could be neighbours Peru who provide the challenge, before a Quarter Final tie with either Spain or Portugal.
Before that is relatively simple for the European side, whether they finish top of the group or second.
Through that though and it’s Germany or Brazil which will provide a stern test. It’ll definitely be an indicator of where Belgium are at, whether they are the world beaters they could be, or the same old Red Devils that were knocked out by Wales two years ago.
They’re certainly an outside bet to make the Semi Final, particularly as they should have no issues when it comes to Group G qualification.
Colombia, Poland or Senegal are lined up to face them in the Round of 16, another winnable game for Gareth Southgate’s men, Germany or Brazil will likely await. That little bit of luck? Place your bets...
As usual, plenty of responsibility will lie on Cristiano Ronaldo’s shoulder, who will be out to upset the Golden Boot odds as well as top Group B.
Qualification should be a given, although Morocco and Iran do have the ability to cause an upset, but we’d certainly fancy a straightforward route to the Quarter Final for the nation.
They proved two years ago they can beat anyone, even when they aren’t on song, so we wouldn’t mind taking a bet on the Portuguese, especially at 4/1.
Most South American sides have a good chance of qualification if their major stars can shine, while Russia will of course have that extra little bit of hope given they’re playing on home soil.
