TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 1 BETTING PREVIEW
This will be the 107th Tour de France with 22 teams taking part in it, each formed by 8 riders, including all 19 UCI World Teams. The first stage of the 107th edition should prove just as exciting. There are three ascents of the 5.1 per cent Cote de Rimiez. The crest of the category three climb comes at kilometre 97, almost 60 kilometres from the finish line.
Anyway, the three laps of the circuit designed for the opening stage should normally lead to a bunch sprint on Promenade des Anglais. There is not a corner in sight for the last 5 kilometres and the pace will be frantic ahead of the final sprint – but if the wind is blowing in off the Med, that finishing straight could be a long slog.
Stage 1 Top Contenders
Given the absence from the race of the likes of Dylan Groenewegen, Fernando Gaviria and Arnaud Demare, Caleb Ewan is the odds-on favorite to score on Day 1. The Australian won 3 stages in last year’s Tour de France. This year, he finished second in the Milano-Torino, a classic one-day race in August. He also took part in Tour de Wallonie where he won the first stage. His closes rival is Sam Bennett, who has won five Grand Tour stages so far. Three in the Giro d’Italia in 2018 and two in last year’s Vuelta. He has never won a TdF stage and will look to break the duck since Day 1. More recently Bennett won a stage in Tour de Wallonie.
Wout Van Aert is another strong candidate. After winning one stage in last year’s Tour, he has been impressive this season. He won the Milan-San Remo few weeks ago and the Strade Bianche. Plus, he won the green jersey in the Criterium du Dauphine this month.
Italian sprinter Giacomo Nizzolo is on really good form this season. He won the European Continental Championships Road Race few days ago, winning a nail-biting sprint ahead of Arnaud Demare and Pascal Ackermann.
Nizzolo's fellow countryman Elia Viviani is another good option as well as Peter Sagan, a rider who rarely fails to grab a podium finish in this kind of stages.
