TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 6 BETTING PREVIEW
Stage 8 is not a not a mountaintop finish, but this is a big day of climbing. Especially as the three climbs are rammed into 80km of racing. After an initial ascent of the Col de Mente (10.9km at 6.4%), the peloton then tackles the Hors Categorie Port de Balès (11.7km at 7.7% - the first HC climb of this Tour), and then the Col de Peyresourde, a Category 1 climb with 9.7km ascent at 7.8% gradient.
Once over the top of the Bales there are about 35km to go. Plus, there’s no flat ground in the valley between the Balès and the final climb for dropped riders to close any gaps.
As usual, we could have two different races - a breakaway for the stage win and GC contenders fighting for the yellow. Anyway, the first part of this stage is very easy and teams like Jumbo Visma can easily control breakaways.
Our Stage 8 Favorites
Primoz Roglic looked brilliant on Stage 4, winning the first uphill finish otf the race. The downhill run to the line also suits the Slovenian, he’s a brilliant descender and this stage looks perfect for him.Adam Yates also looked in great form. Being in yellow comes with extra responsibility, and his team aren’t really built for the mountains. Probably, he will need to defend his yellow jersey from multiple attack rather than looking for the stage win.
Egan Bernal doesn’t look at his best while his fellow countryman Nairo Quintana has been quiet so far and could be the surprise package of the day.
Miguel Angel Lopez is the other Colombian rider who is expected to attack on descent from the Port de Bales or the final climb while Thibaut Pinot looks enough fit to challenge the best riders after a big crash last Saturday.
Tadej Pogacar may want to try to steal back some of the time he lost on Stage 7, as well as Mikel Landa and the Trek-Segafredo duo of Bauke Mollema and Richie Porte.
HC mountains could be to hard for Julian Alaphilippe but the Frenchman is a skilled descender and could close eventual gaps.
Who to back in case of winning breakaways?
Thomas De Gendt and Alessandro De Marchi are the "evergreen" when we talk about breakaways and looks suited for this kind of stages.Alexey Lutsenko has already won a stage with an impressive breakaway and could try to repeat it.
Ilnur Zakarin is a dangerous riders in days like this while Alejandro Valverde is always a threat on days like this but maybe he is still to close to the Yellow Jersey to be allowed to go in a breakaway.
Warren Barguil, Daniel Martinez, Pello Bilbao, Hugh Carthy, Greg Van Avermaet, Lennard Kamna, Davide Formolo and Jesus Herrada are other good options while Dan Martin is completely out of form.
