TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 9 BETTING PREVIEW

Stage 8 starts with over 50km of flat after Pau, then the peloton hits the Col de la Hourciere, a climb never seen before at the Tour. This ascent is 11.1km long and averages 8.8 per cent gradient. It is followed by the Col de Soudet, 3.8km long and an 8.5 per cent gradient, but much steeper in sections.

After the category 3 Col d'Ichère, the last major hurdle before the rest day is a category one opportunity to the top of Col de Marie Blanque. This ascent is 7.7 kilometres long and the average gradient is 8.6 per cent, although the pitch is closer to 11 or 12 per cent near the top. The finish line is on a false flat uphill.

We expect Stage 9 to play out much like Stage 8, with essentially two races within one: a breakaway getting a large lead and producing the stage winner and the GC contenders fighting for the yellow on the final climb.

Stage 9 Contenders

Riders will need descending skills as much as climbing expertise, so there is no chance for riders such as Ilnur Zakarin.

Hence, we expect again Thomas De Gendt and, finally, Alessandro De Marchi to be involved again in the winning breakaway.

Julian Alaphilippe is far enough from the yellow jersey now (11'42") and will be allowed to escape. His descending skills could be the decisive factor but, probably, the climbs are too steep for him.

Other probable attackers could be EF Pro Cycling’s Daniel Martínez, Mitchelton-Scott’s Mikel Nieve, Quick-Step’s Bob Jungels, and Astana’s Omar Fraile.

The likes of Warren Barguil, Pierre-Roger Latour, Hugh Carthy, Pello Bilbao, Alexey Lutsenko and Mark Hirschi, Davide Formolo and Nicolas Roche are other names to keep an eye on.

What about GC Contenders?

If no breakaway succeed, the stage feels tailor made for Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic, who have been the best climbers so far and also have descending skills.

Adam Yates and Egan Bernal looked vulnerable on the final climb on Stage 8, getting gapped at least twice but recovering to rejoin the best riders. We expect a defensive approach from them, as well as from Thibaut Pinot who is struggling with injuries after an early crash.

Conversely, we expect Guillaume Martin and Nairo Quintana to shine, as the duo have shown they have good legs on Saturday.
