Tour De France Stage 11 Betting Preview
This year, for the first time in Tour de France history, Mont Ventoux will be ascended twice within a single stage. After 100km of warmup, including three other categorized climbs - including the Col de la Liguièr (Cat.1, 9.3km at 6.7%) - the pack will ascend twice to Ventoux, first via the more “gentle” side from the town of Sault (22km at 5.1%) and then via the shorter but steeper climb from Bedoin (15.7km at 8.8%).
Stage 11 Favourites
Tadej Pogacar is the obvious favourite. He is the strongest climber by a mile but there is a fast descent to the finish and he may consider that it is more sensible to protect his overall lead than risk trying to extend it here.Ben O'Connor won at Tignes few days ago. The Aussie must be considered as a genuine contender to finish on the podium so he will not have the same freedom.
Jonas Vingegaard, Rigoberto Urán and Enric Mas are the other general classification riders that will aim to stay with Pogaçar rather than attack him.
Richard Carapaz is fifth in the GC and Ineos must be inventive to move him up the standings. One of Geraint Thomas, Tao Geoghegan Hart or Richie Porte could join the breakaway and try to help their captain late in the stage.
Any breakaway rider to back?
Since GC contenders will probably mark each other, we expect a breakaway to succeed.Bahrain’s Wout Poels has shown great climbing form so far and, since he is far from the yellow jersey, he is a genuine contender.
Julian Alaphilippe looked brilliant yesterday and the World Champion could try to add another prestigious stage win to his resume. His descending skills also are a big plus.
Movistar are likely to be aggressive in sending riders into the breakaway.
Miguel Angel Lopez won the Ventoux challenge in June setting the fastest time on the ascent since 2004. Anyway, he looked very tired on Tuesday and far from being brilliant since the start of the Tour. Alejandro Valverde in another rider we expect to attack from the distance.
His compatriot, Sergio Higuita could go for it as well, if he is not tasked with pacing Rigoberto Uran up to Mont Ventoux.
Should Vincenzo Nibali reach the Ventoux summit in good position, he is a strong candidate to be a stage winner considering his skills as descender. Dylan Teuns already has a stage win but can’t be discounted from getting a second.
Sepp Kuss, Pello Bilbao, Jakob Fuglsang, Nairo Quintana, Mattia Cattaneo, Michael Woods, Omar Fraile, Esteban Chaves, Simon Yates and Lucas Hamilton are other strong breakaway candidates that could challenge for stage victory on Wednesday.
