Tour De France Stage 13 Betting Preview
The final 22 kilometers are the same as in 2018 when the Tour last finished a stage in Carcassonne. That day, the peloton finished 13 minutes behind a big break that was brought home by Magnus Cort Nielsen. The only categorised climb, the Côte du Pic Saint-Loup (5.5km at 3.6%) occurs at kilometre 51. It is likely that the breakaway will have formed by the time the riders reach this point.
The only questions is - will sprinters' team have enough energies to chase the attackers? Plus, the weather will be hot, and winds could be a factor. The race is, after all, not too far from the roads where Thibaut Pinot and Tadej Pogacar lost time in the crosswinds in 2019 and 2020, respectively. We could see echelons form here as teams try to pressure Tour-leader Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) and his team.
Hence, unlike Thursday’s Stage 12, we expect the peloton to keep it close.
Stage 13 Favourites
Mark Cavendish maybe has the last chance to win a stage as he is could also decide to retire before the Pyrenees. His team - Deceuninck-Quick Step - had a day-off on Thursday and we expect them to be ready and willing on Stage 13. After all, the Brit sprinter remains one win away from tying Eddy Merckx for the most stage wins in Tour de France history.Cav's main threat is represented by Wout Van Aert. The Belgian has won Tour stages from wind-reduced bunches in the past and his condition is improving day by day, unlike most of his opponents.
Another rider who looks able to worry the Manx Missile is Jasper Philipsen. His team is deplted, so he should take advantage of other teams efforts.
Other sprinters that could pose a threat are Christophe Laporte, Nacer Bouhanni, Cees Bol and Sonny Colbrelli.
Long shots?
The stage is far from guaranteed to be decided in a mass sprint. If a breakaway goes to the finish line, of course, it will be very difficult to picks the winner.Since Peter Sagan has dropped out of the team, Bora-Hansgrohe has changed its strategy and earned the first stage win on Wednesday with Nils Politt. This time we could see riders such as Ide Schelling, Daniel Oss and Lukas Postlberger in the breakaway.
Other escape hoepefuls are Anthony Turgis, Greg Van Avermaet, Dylan van Baarle, Michael Valgren, Oliver Naesen, Mads Pedersen, Philippe Gilbert, Jan Bakelants, Kasper Asgreen, Magnus Cort Nielsen and Jasper Stuyven.
