Tour De France Stage 14 Predictions, Betting Tips & Odds (Carcassonne > Quillan - 10.7.2021)
- Written by David Bet
Stage 14 of the Tour De France, a 184km run from Carcassonne to Quillan, has just under 3,000 metres of climbing on the cards. This should give the breakaway a superb chance of going all the way to the line. Tour De France Stage 14 Betting Preview
Probably for the first time in Tour history, no less than five stages are being raced in the Pyrénées.The first one provides the perfect chance for breakaway riders to have their glory day.
With five categorized climbs, it’s no easy day although there are no big mountains to climb. In other words, the terrain shouldn’t disturb the GC contenders too much, which will suit the escapees perfectly.
After the first 60 kilometers of flat roads, the route is constantly up and down on narrow back roads. The steepest climb of the stage, the Col de Montségur, is a second category climb thatverages more than 8% over 4.3km. The Col de Saint-Louis (which features a kilometer-long section at 12 percent), 17 kilometers from the finish, will be the deciding point.
From the crest of this final hill, there is a rapid descent into the finish at Quillan, where a solo winner or a sprint between a very small group is the most likely scenario since the final 5km are mostly flat.
A finisheur with good climbing skills is the perfect profile for this stage.
Stage 14 Favourites
Wout Van Aert is our first choice. He can make the break, climb like a specialist and beat every other rider in a sprint. If he makes the break no one will want to take him to the line. Things will not be easy for the Belgian. We expect Deceuninck-Quick Step to have more than one rider in the breakaway. Julian Alaphilippe and Kasper Asgreen are the obvious candidate. The Frenchman has won the opening stage and failed many other attempts to pick up his 7th Tour De France stage win. With shorter, sharper ascents, this stage matches Alaphilippe's skillset more closely.
Magnus Cort Nielsen has been quiet so far and we expect a strong performance by the Dane sooner or later. Michael Valgren also is agood option for team EF. He was climbing very well at the Dauphinee and this stage could suit him.
Sonny Colbrelli is another strong candidate. If Alaphilippe and Van Aert get marked, the Italian can challenge the best riders on short and steep climbs. Plus, he is fast enough to win a reduced bunch sprint. Dylan Teuns and Matej Mohoric are further options for team Bahrain.
Jasper Stuyven has a similar profile. He went very close to win a stage when runner-up to Mohoric in the first week. He could struggle on the final climb but can recover on the descent and contest the sprint.
Dark horses?
Nairo Quintana will be probably out to hoover-up points in the KOM classification but we don't think the Colombian can win the stage.Wout Poel crashed on Friday's stage and should not be 100% fit today.
The steep ramps on the final climb could suit the talented David Gaudu (who was sick on the Mont Ventoux), though Valentin Madouas could also pose a threat.
Alejandro Valverde, Michael Matthews, Alex Aranburu, Michael Woods and Omar Fraile all have valid claims, but that list could be extended to 20 riders and there would still be danger of missing the eventual winner.
Other riders with a good shot from a breakaway group include Vincenzo Nibali, Ruben Guerreiro, Ion Izaguirre, Jakob Fuglsang, Bauke Mollema, Benoît Cosnefroy, Sergio Higuita, Patrick Konrad and Pierre Latour.
