Tour De France Stage 15 Betting Preview
After leaving Céret, the road heads uphill for the first 15km. This gives the breakaway a good chance to form.A short descent to the valley will give everyone in the peloton a chance to catch their breath, but the route is mostly a gentle but steady uphill grind all the way to the Intermediate Sprint in Olette (km 66.9).
The first category Montée de Mont-Louis is categorised at 8.4km and 5.7%. The Cat.2 Col de Puymorens (5.8km in length at 4.7%) comes next and after a long false-flat and a brief descent, the Port d'Envalira begins, carrying the Tour de France into Andorra.
This is a Category 1 ascent, 10.7km at 5.9%. At 2,408 meters, it’s the highest climb in the 2021 Tour de France and the highest paved road in the Pyrenees.
From the summit, a long descent takes them to the bottom of the day’s final challenge: the Category 1 Col de Beixalis (6.4km at 8.5%). The first half rises at more than 10% and features sections up to 15%.
After cresting the climb, the final 15km sees the riders descend into the capital city of Andorra, Andorre-la-Vieille. The descent ends right down to the 1km-to-go banner, leaving little time for re-grouping before the end of the stage.
Stage 15 Favourites
Yellow Jersey Tadej Pogaçar will have all eyes on him after what happened on Mont ventous. The Slovenian was dropped by Vingegaard on the final ascent, showing a little weakness for the first time.Richard Carapaz and Rigoberto Uran helped Pogaçar to chase Vingegaard on the Ventoux descent. The Ecuadorian doesn't seem strong as he would like while Uran usually improves in the final week of Grand Tours so we can expect a great performance from him.
Jonas Vingegaard was the strongest climber of the GC favourites on Mont Ventoux. The Dane is expected to make fireworks in order to regain his position in the General Classification, as Guillaume Martin earned over 5 minutes on Saturday. Wout Van Aert will probably make the race harder for his captain.
Guillaume Martin is now second in the GC. Of course, he will not be allowed to escape so the Frenchman will have to fight to retain his position behind the race leader.
Breakaway Hopefuls?
Vincenzo Nibali, one of the great descenders of his era, may well be inspired to emulate his teammate Mollema's triumph. This could be the last chance for the 2014 Tour De France winner as he is expected to leave the peloton to start his preparations for the Olympics.Colombian climbers would love this stage because of altitude, long climbs and gentle gradients. So, Sergio Higuita, Esteban Chaves, Nairo Quintana and Miguel Angel Lopez are genuine contenders here.
It seems like half the peloton now live in Andorra, because of favorable tax regime.
Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quickstep), Tao Gheoghen Hart (Ineos) and Dan Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation), Ben O'Connor, Sep Kuss, Enric Mas and Ruben Guerreiro all live in Andorra and know these roads well. Ion Izaguirre is another rider that knows very well these climbs and he will be probably one of the attackers.
Wouter Poels and Michael Woods exchanged blows in collecting KOM points on Saturday. They will probably escape early but we don't expect them to win the stage.
Our breakaway candidate list also includes Patrick Konrad, Dylan Teuns, Pello Bilbao, Alejandro Valverde, Emmanuel Buchmann, David Gaudu and Matej Mohoric.
