Tour De France Stage 16 Betting Preview

This stage seems to favor breakaway riders who will still be fresh enough in this third week of racing. It contains four categorised climbs, the last two of which come inside the final 33km and average over 7% of gradient.

The first two ascents - the Col de Port (11.4 kilometres at 5.1%) and the Col de la Core (13.1 kilometres at 6.6%) - are not difficult but will probably see many riders trying to escape.

A long descent followed by a false flat section will carry the riders to the next test: the Col de Portet-d'Aspet.

Another long descent off the Portet-Aspet (5.4 kilometres at 7.1%), might give a few distanced riders a chance to get back to the front, which could set-up an exciting finale on the day’s smallest, but most strategically-placed climb: the Category 4 Côte d'Aspret-Sarrat (800m at 8.4%).

Following a short descent, just 5km lie before the finish line.

GC contenders' team will probably for the next grueling stages on the Pyrenees so chances are that the breakaway will be given enough freedom to fight for the stage honours.

Stage 16 Possible Contenders

Team Jumbo-Visma could try to place Steven Kruijswijk, Sepp Kuss and Wout van Aert in the stage breakaway, leaving Mike Teunissen with GC hopeful Jonas Vingegaard. Van Aert could be also used as satellite rider for his captain in the final kilometers, if needed.

Team Ineos could also go for the stage win after their unsuccessfully attempts to drop Pogaçar. The likes Teo Gheoghan Hart and Michael Kwiatkowski could be the right names.

Movistar are another team that haven’t enjoyed the Tour so far. Ivan Garcia Cortina and Alejandro Valverde (second behind Sepp Kuss on Sunday) are the rider to keep an eye on.

Team Astana - Premier Tech will also aim to get their first stage victory with the likes of Ion Izaguirre, Alex Aranburu, Omar Fraile and Jakob Fuglsang the likely stage hunters.

Sergio Higuita, Magnus Cort Nielsen and Ruben Guerreiro are the candidates for team EF Education - Nippo while it has been a quiet Tour for breakaway specialist Thomas De Gendt so far and we expect him to deliver a strong performance sooner or later.

Julian Alaphilippe is the obvious name for Deceuninck Quick-Step while other French riders that could join Alaphilippe off the front are Pierre Rolland, David Gaudu, Benoit Cosnefroy, Pierre Latour and Valentin Madouas.

A range of riders could win this from the breakaway. Wout Poels, Mattia Cattaneo, Bauke Mollema, Neilson Powless, Patrick Konrad, Matej Mohoric, Michael Woods, Dylan Teuns and Greg Van Avermaet all deserve a special mention.
