TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 2 BETTING PREVIEW
Stage 2 has six classified climbs, including three early climbs - the Côte de Sainte-Barbe, the Côte de Pordic and the Côte de Saint-Brieuc. The stage ends with a double ascent of the Mûr-de-BretagneThe Mûr de Bretagne is a classic Tour de France finish. The climb has featured on six stages since 2000 and has hosted a stage finish three times since 2010. It’s only 2 km long but averages 6.9 per cent and is even steeper in its first half.
The first ascent on the The Mûr de Bretagne awards time bonuses. The second time around, the climb is approached from a different direction. Of course, the final climb is where the stage will most likely be decided. The only question is, where will the favourites attack? At the base of the climb - where the steepest gradient is - or in the final km?
Stage 2 Favourites
Julian Alaphilippe won stage one of the 2021 Tour de France. The Frenchman attacked early on the Côte de la Fosse aux Loups and was unreachable for all the other contenders who tried to chase him. The current world champion is the favourite number one, and wearing the yellow jersey will give extra motivations.Alpecin-Fenix's Mathieu Van Der Poel wasn't able to follow Alaphilippe in the first stage but he looked the best of the rest.
Of course, we expect the GC riders to be active at the front on the finish.
Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic, who both got involved in the action on the final climb of stage 1, will battle not only ofr the stage win, but also to earn a few seconds over the other GC contenders.
Other Contenders
Stage threats include Pierre Latour of TotalEnergies who was active on Stage 1 and has plenty of experience over the last climb. Michael Matthews, Wout Van Aert and Michael Woods can't be ruled out as well. Anyway, the Belgian will likely be on Roglic duty while the Canadian lost eight minutes on the opening stage after getting caught up in the heavy crash.Team Ineos duo Richard Carapaz and Geraint Thomas will likely arrive with the best riders but both lack the explosivity required to win this stage. Other two Ineos riders - Richie Porte and Tao Geoghegan Hart - both lost time due to crashes while Pogacar's team-mate Marc Hirschi was badly hurt.
Peter Sagan disappointed the last two times the Tour arrived here and looks far from his best form while Chris Froome was involved in the second nasty crash in Stage 1 and crossed the finish line after almost 15 minutes after Alaphilippe.
Looking for dark horses?
In 2015 it was Alexis Vuillermoz who won solo on the Mur de Bretagne, with Dan Martin in second. The Irishman won in 2018 and, as a consequence, is a strong contender here.Despite being 41 years old, Alejandro Valverde has shown to be able to win stage at the Criterium du Dauphine earlier this month.
Alexey Lutsenko, Christophe Laporte, Sonny Colbrelli and David Gaudu are further interesting long shots.
