TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 3 BETTING PREVIEW 

After two days for the puncheurs, the third Stage is a flat one and it should finish with a bunch sprint, at least on paper.

There are only two Category 4 climbs (the Côte de Cadoudal and the Côte de Pluméliau), but the final two-thirds of the stage are filled with ramps and rollers that could make Stage 3 as leg-breaking as the previous two.

The current weather forecast suggests rain, and it could favour attackers. There could  be quite a lot of crosswind throughout the day, and GC teams could try to attack. Furthermore, there are a series of short kickers that finish with 7.5km to go and we should see a big battle to get to the front with 8km to go since the descent will end with less than 3km to go. The final 1.5km are a straight drag to the finish line, aside from a roundabout at about 700m to-go.

Stage 3 Favourites

Last year’s green jersey winner Sam Bennett out because of injury, so Caleb Ewan is the red hot favourite should the race end in a bunch sprint. The Aussie finished 2nd at the Milan-Sanremo and won two sprint stages at the Giro d'Italia before withdrawing to conserve energy.

Tim Merlier went head-to-head with Ewan several times last year and can't be ruled out. But with his teammate Mathieu van der Poel in yellow, it’s tough to say exactly how Alpecin-Fenix will play things.

Mark Cavendish is highly fancied by bookmakers but the Brit is 36 years old now and looks past his best. Anyway, he won four stages at the Tour of Turkey and should be in the mix.

Veteran Arnaud Démare is having a very strong season and won last month's Boucles de la Mayenne. Jacopo Guarnieri will play a crucial role in his leadout.

Michael Matthews has shown he has good legs in the first stage - he won the sprint behind the runaway winner Julian Alaphilippe - and is a real contender.

Peter Sagan is not riding his best now. Anyway, he won the Points Classification at the Giro earlier this year and should never be counted out.

Long shots?

We shoul keep an eye on Cees Bol, as he finished in the Top 10 in four sprints in last year's edition of the Tour, and impressively won Stage 2 at the Paris-Nice this year.

Mathieu Van De Poel could be dangerous both in case of bunch sprint or a sprint of 30-40 riders.

The stage could also suit Wout Van Aert, but the Belgian is likely to protect his captain Primoz Roglic. Jumbo-Visma possess the strength in depth to protect Primož Roglic without the assistance of Van Aert, so he should be given the freedom to chase stage victory.

Rain could favor Mads Pedersen but but he crashed on Saturday, and his conditions are unclear.

Nacer Bouhanni, Bryan Coquard and Sonny Colbrelli also have top 5 ambitions.
