TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 4 BETTING PREVIEW

Just like the opening stage, Stage 3 was marred by high-profile crashes. Jack Haig and Robert Gesink were forced to abandon the Tour de France, while a plethora of riders crashed including Primoz Roglic, Caleb Ewan, Peter Sagan, Tadej Pogacar, David Gaudu and Geraint Thomas. Many riders may not be able to start stage 4 due to their injuries.

At the end, Tim Merlier won the bunch sprint, with his leadout man Jasper Philipsen runner up and many other contenders unable to sprint.

Stage 4 is likely to feature another bunch sprint. With just over 1,300 metres of climbing to take place over 150 kilometres, there are no king of the mountains sprints. The stage is also one of the shortest of the 2021 route. The peloton will need to be careful with the win and the echelons because there are a lot of open parts, but it mainly should be a good day for another bunch sprint.

The final turn occurs with 900 metres to go and there will be a tough battle for position ahead of this corner. Sprinters with strong leadout will be favoured here.

Stage 4 Favourites

With Mathieu Van Der Poel as his last man and Caleb Ewan out of the Tour De France with a fractured collarbone, Tim Merlier is the red-hot favourite. The Australian did not finish the stage, ultimately abandoning the race and being taken away in an ambulance.

Mark Cavendish was one of the affected riders and didn't sprinted on Monday. The Manx Missile won the stage when the Tour arrived in Fougeres six years ago and will rely upon Michael Morkov, one of the best leadout men in the peloton.

Nacer Bouhanni finished 3rd  yesterday and The Frenchman is a candidate for a Top 3 finish once again. His fellow countryman Bryan Coquard was one of the riders to crash, so he could be not 100% fit.

Another French sprinter, Arnaud Demare lost his leadout man Ignatas Konovalovas who was caught up in the infamous crash on Stage 1. Demare was also brought down and unable to sprint for Stage 3, so we should check his conditions after that crash.

Wout Van Aert has stated that he will be conserving his energy for the time-trial on stage five and is not expected to sprint.

Peter Sagan collided with Caleb Ewan and suffered an injury on his hip. Anyway, the Slovakian should be able to run this stage and should not be ignored for a top 5 place.

Long shots?

Cees Bol finished 8th yesterday and looked to have more potential. Davide Ballerini and Sonny Colbrelli (4th and 5th respectively) also have Top 10 ambitions. They might crack the code if they get a leadout.

Finally, should Tim Merlier have problems, his leadout man Jasper Philipsen (2nd on Monday) can compete with the other sprinters.
