TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 5 BETTING PREVIEW
The 27km course is the longest time-trial prior to the first rest day at the Tour de France since 2012. The final kilometres in Laval are technical with lots of corners until the finish but most of the stage will be run on flat. This is a stage for pure time trial specialists, powerful riders able to push a big gear on rolling roads. Climbers could lose 2 to 3 minutes while many GC contenders will run in "survival mode" after plenty of crashes in the first four stages.
Stage 5 Favourites
It would have been a perfect stage for Primož Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) but they are still licking their wound and they may miss the chance to distance themselves from other contenders.Due to the length of the time-trial, we can expect a major reshuffling in the GC. Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) only 8 and 31 seconds behind current leader Mathieu Van Der Poel. The Dutch is unproven over time trials - he has never competed as a professional in an individual time trial of such length - and is resigned to lose the yellow jersey.
Van Aert is one of the best on the TT bike in the world. Earlier in 2021, he defeated both Filippo Ganna and Stefan Kung over the 10-kilometre Tirreno-Adriatico time-trial.
Other Contenders
Tadej Pogaçar was 4th in the TT in the UAE and Tirreno-Adriatico and will hope to put significant time into Carapaz and potentially Roglic.Kasper Asgreen is a fantastic time-trialist. He is the Danish champion in this discipline and will be a rider to follow.
Stefan Kung has recorded good results this season in all the TT he contested and is a candidate to make the Top 5.
Stefan Bissegger is only 22, but he is proving himself as one of the best time-trialist in the world having won the TT at Paris-Nice, beating Primoz Roglic and Remi Cavagna in the process.
Other riders with a chance of finishing near the top of the stage standings include Wilco Kelderman, Mikkel Bjerg, Alexey Lutsenko, Brandon McNulty, Jonas Vingegaard, Søren Kragh Andersen, Tony Martin and Jonathan Castroviejo.
