TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 6 BETTING PREVIEW
Stage 5 is short sprint stage - like we had on Stage 4 - but this time with one small, categorised climb just before halfway. The finish looks straightforward enough but there are two sharp turns just inside 2km to go. Crosswinds are another possible factor along the course.
The forecast calls for light winds out of the north, so the final hour of racing will be extremely fast, favoring the sprinters’ team chasing down the day’s main breakaway.
Stage 6 Favourites
Given recent form and the impressive Stage 4 victory, Mark Cavendish is the bookies' favourite. couldn’t compete on the first sprint stage this year and was lucky just to survive it. But the way he brushed past his competitors approaching the line in the 4th Stage, suggest that if in contention at the finish, the British sprinter will be hard to beat.Tim Merlier is the favourite number 2. He was the beneficiary of the bad crash involving top sprinter Caleb Ewan in Stage 3 few days ago. The Alpecin sprinter may not have needed the carnage to win the stage as he won a stage at the Giro d’Italia earlier this yera, and five times in 2021 has triumphed in one day races.
His team-mate Jasper Philipsen finished 2nd to Meriler in Stage 3. He contested the Stage 4 sprint but he sprinted too early (Merlier launched him with 200 meters to go). Whichever rider Alpecin-Fenix decides to ride for – Tim Merlier or Jasper Philipsen – should be in the mix as well
Wout Van Aert doesn't look at his best. His pre-Tour appendix removal perhaps has interrupted his final preparations. The Belgian is a bit of a wildcard. If he goes for it, he will be a real contender.
Arnaud Demare, who has a couple of notable wins this year, La Roue Tourangelle and Boucles de la Mayenne. The Frenchman should not be ruled out, despite poor results so far.
Nacer Bouhanni finished runner up on Tuesday and he looks to be on the verge of breaking through with his first-ever stage win at the Tour.
Long shots?
Peter Sagan should be fully fit after crashing on Stage 3. He is the king of positioning and could be a serious contender for the podium. The former World Champion Mads Pedersen also crashed heavily on stage one and his conditions are unknown.
Other riders with a chance in a bunch finish include Christophe Laporte, Cees Bol, Sonny Colbrelli, Max Walscheid, Cees Bol and André Greipel.
