TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 8 BETTING PREVIEW
Tour De France stage 8 his will be a crucial test for all GC contenders due to the mix of big climbs and a descent to the finish. An uphill start will favor attackers over the chase but the Category 1 Côte de Mont-Saxonneaux, the Category 1 Col de Romme and the legendary Col de la Colombière will see GC contenders fighting for the Yellow Jersey. The Romme amounts to 8.8 kilometres at 8.9%, while the Colombière is 7.5 kilometres long and averages 8.5%. The final 2.5km of the Colombiere average almost 10 percent gradient. Bonus seconds are available atop the Colombiere, before a fast descent into the finish. After the summit, we head down to Le Grand Bornand.
There are two likely scenarios - a successful breakaway or GC teams keeping things tight to allow captains to go for the stage win.
Stage 8 Favourites
In the latter case Tadej Pogacar is the obvious facourite. He is among the best climbers of the peloton and is clearly in great shape, after winning the Individual Time Trial few days ago.The last time the race finished in le Grand Bornand, in 2018, it was Julian Alaphilippe who emerged victorious from the breakaway. This time, the current World Champions is too close to other GC contenders and will be marked by other Yellow Jersey hopefuls.
Alaphilippe and Pogacar are among the best descenders of the peloton. They could opt to go on the attack on the Colombière and finish it off with a brilliant descent.
Mathieu van der Poel may have increased his general classification lead on Friday but his climbing skills will be put to the test here and he may finally have to give up his beloved yellow jersey.
Wout Van Aert is another rider who can love this stage profile but the Belgian could be tired after a long breakaway on Stage 7.
Richard Carapaz looked brilliant on Friday and we expect the Ineos captain to attack again on the final climb. The Ecuadorian is a good descender, has a solid tactical sense for the race, and is willing to improve his position in the standings.
EF Education-Nippo’s Rigoberto Uran is an evergreen. We expect him to run un conservative mode as usal but the Colombian should be in the mix in the final kilometers.
This stage would usually suit Primoz Roglic but his ambitions are all but over after he crashed earlier this week and lost just under four minutes on the Signal d'Uchon yesterday. Jonas Vingegaard is now the Jumbo Visma captain and we should keep an eye on the Dane as well as on Movistar's captain Enric Mas.
Who will make the breakaway?
Yesterday, we correctly predicted most of the riders who escaped, including the winner Matej Mohoric, Mathieu Van Der Poel, Wout Van Aert, Simon Yates and many more..Today, we expect riders such as Dan Martin, Michael Woods, Wout Poels, Pello Bilbao, Jacob Fuglsang, Alejandro Valverde, Alex Aranbaru, Miguel Angel Lopez, Jon Izaguirre and Dylan Teuns.
Other possible candidates are Tao Geoghegan Hart, Guillaume Martin, Ben O'Connor Carlos Verona, Jesús Herrada and Nairo Quintana.
It's hard to predict which rider will have the legs to go to the finish line, but we back Fuglsang and Miguel Angel Lopez (who is already nine minutes down) to perform well.
