TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 9 BETTING PREVIEW

Stage 9 starts with a false flat to the base of the first ascent of the day, category 2 Côte de Domancy (2.5 km at 9.4%), the first of the five categorized climbs of the stage.

The following ascents are the Col de Saisies (9.4km at 6.2%, Cat. 1,) the Col du Pré (12.6 km at 7.7%, Hors Category), and the Cormet de Roseland (5.7 km at 6.5%, Cat. 2).

The final climb to Tignes is long and steady by not so steep (21 km @ 5.6%, Cat. 1 ). After two tough days, the ascent will be testing even if the gradient is below 10%. Plus, it will take riders above 2000 meters from the first time at this year's edition.

With the first rest day coming on Monday, the challengers won’t be holding back on this first high-altitude finish. The real fireworks should come on the final climb which, despite the finish line coming 2km after the official summit.

Stage 9 Favourites

Stage 8 was dominated by Tadej Pogacar who obliterated his GC rivals to gain a big lead in the general classification.

After a huge effort on Saturday, the new race leader and his UAE Team Emirates will be probably playing defense. Anyway, the competition has spent a lot of energy trying to limit their losses and should the Slovenian decide to go full gas, we would see huge gaps again.

Jumbo-Visma's duo Wout Van Aert and Jonas Vingegaard are second and fifth in the general classification respectively and could try a "tag team" attack.

Maybe they will be helped by team Ineos, with Geraint Thomas, Richie Porte and Tao Geoghegan Hart expected to launch Richard Carapaz, who is now the team's captain.

Other rivals like Alexey Lutsenko, Rigoberto Uran and Enric Mas, will try to take advantage of this situation but they clearly don't have legs to trouble the Yellow Jersey.

Will be there a winning breakaway?

A breakaway is likely to form and be allowed to go up the road. We don't expect team Emirates UAE to chase, unless there are GC contenders among the attackers. Hence, only teams such as Jumbo-Visma and team Ineos could chase the breakaway.

Will it be enough?

The likes of Dan Martin, Pierre Latour, Jesus Herrada, Carlos Verona, Warren Barguil, Thomas De Gendt, Ruban Guerreiro and Esteban Chaves are likely attackers with good chances to win the stage.

Simon Yates should be fatigued after two days out of the peloton (as well as Michael Woods), while Miguel Angel Lopez, Matej Mohoric and Jakob Fuglsang might have saved their legs for this stage 4,600 vertical climbing metres.

Nairo Quintana has won on profiles like this one before and he is out of the overall running, so could have a free tilt at the run to Tignes.
