Amanda Nunes has rebounded from a TKO defeat to Cat Zingano in 2014 to win four straight fights - including those against Shayna Baszler and Sara McMann - that earned her a shot at the UFC Bantamweight title against Miesha Tate at UFC 200 back in July. The Brazilian destroyed 'Cupcake' in just over three minutes to be crowned the new UFC women’s bantamweight champion.
Nunes is an excellent striker. She has a black belt in jiu jitsu, a brown belt in judo and a devastating punching power. Great footwork, solid takedown defence, slick countering and an aggressive high gear which is flicked on when needs be. The key for her, however, is her grappling and defense to the endless armbar attempts she’s about to face. Some will point to the fact that three of the women Nunes has lost to were stopped by Rousey, but MMA maths is nonsense.
Ronda Rousey has not stepped foot inside the Octagon since being brutally knocked out by Holly Holm in late 2015. Prior ot that fight, she boasted a perfect 12-0 record – with 11 of those wins coming in the first round – and few gave Holly Holm a chance of dethroning ‘Rowdy’ Ronda. Not only was Rousey left battered and bloodied, she was also left mentally broken by the defeat and later admitted she had been left suicidal by the defeat. For the first time in her MMA career, Ronda Rousey (-140) will not be entering the cage as a huge favourite.
Ronda Rousey is a judo specialist with an outstanding ground game. Her aim will be to close the distance, get a hold of Nunes, loosen her hips, fling her to the ground and rip her elbow joint to shreds. She usually is too hittable and she has to pay attention to Amanda Nunes' powerful shots. Her opponent is the most talented all around female fighter in the UFC, but there’s no doubt that Ronda Rousey is the best athlete.
