Barcelona aim to win the competition for the fifth straight year

Barcelona dropped points at home in La Liga this weekend against Valencia. They were held 2-2 at home, a result that ended their 8 match winning streak in La Liga. The Blaugrana now top the table with 6 points over Atletico Madrid (who lost 1-0 against Betis) and 8 points over Real Madrid. Lionel Messi will not be risked as he was hurt in the second half of Barca's 2-2 draw against Valencia at the weekend. Rafinha and Samuel Umtiti will also miss out but Ernesto Valverde could welcome back Ousmane Dembele from a hamstring injury, at least to sit on the bench. Youngster Carles Alena may be asked to start out wide on the right, completing the front trio with Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho. The likes of Jordi Alba and Arthur should both return to the team, while Clement Lenglet is expected to get the nod over Thomas Vermaelen in central defence.

Real Madrid are enjoying a run of five straight wins in all competitions, including a 3-0 home win over Deportivo Alaves over the weekend. They have scored at least 2 goals in each match in the process. Getting an away goal on Wednesday evening could be vital and Real Madrid have also scored in each of their last 14 visits to Camp Nou in all competitions. As to direct encounters, the Blancos suffered a 5-1 defeat to the Catalans back in October. It was their fifth loss in the last six meetings with the fierce rivals.

Dani Carvajal and Raphael Varane are expected to return to the XI here after missing last time out in the league because of suspension. Gareth Bale and Marco Asensio will both be eyeing the other spot in attack having returned from injury, but it seems likely that Vinicius Junior will get the nod over Asensio, with Karim Benzema retaining his berth as central striker. Toni Kroos will come back into the midfield alongside Luka Modric, while Casemiro and Marcos Llorente are in contention for the defensive midfield spot. Only Jesus Vallejo and Luca Zidane (both hamstring) are absent.
