After further European Championship Final heartbreak, Gareth Southagate has resigned just two days after missing out on Euro 2024 glory, with the Three Lions losing 2-1 to Spain in the final in Berlin.
In a message to England fans, Southgate explained: "As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager."
He continued: "The squad we took to Germany is full of exciting young talent and they can win the trophy we all dream of. I am so proud of them, and I hope we get behind the players and the team at St George’s Park and the FA who strive every day to improve English football, and understand the power football has to drive positive change".
With England back in action in September in the Nations League, attention now turns to who will replace the 53-year-old. Will the Football Association continue down the English path, with Graham Potter continually touted for the role, or will they revert back to a foreign coach, a la Fabio Capello or Sven-Goran Eriksson?
Who are the favourites to replace Southgate?
Many of the usual suspects are among the favourites for the top job.
The best bookies in the UK have installend Graham Potter as odds-on favorite for the job. The former Brighton & Hove Albion head coach has been out of a job since being sacked by Chelsea in April last year. He has reportedly turned down multiple high-profile club jobs and given his more progressive brand of football, he could be just what this squad of players need to succeed although the struggles he endured at Stamford Bridge is one black mark against him.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is second on the list. He has done a fine job at St. James' Park since succeeding Steve Bruce in November 2021. The Englishman has long been linked to the managerial role, going all the way back to his Bournemouth days.
Current England U21 manager Lee Carsley has the next shortest odds to take over as England boss. He has strong credentials having won the U21 Euros with England in 2023 for the first time in 39 years. Southgate was also promoted from the U21s when he was given the senior national team job, and the FA could just to hire internally once again.
Next England Manager Favourites
Here are the odds of the top favourites to be appointed as next England permanent manager. The dark horses
Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel are next in line at 8/1 and 12/1 respectively. Poch is highly touted having left his role at Stamford Bridge at the end of the season. The Argentine worked closely with Harry Kane and Kyle Walker, Three Lions' captain and vice-captain in Germany, while Tottenham boss.
Tuchel managed Bayern Munich last season but left the Bavarians on the back of failing to secure a trophy-laden campaign. He had been heavily linked with the Man Utd manager's job before the INEOS board decided to retain Erik ten Hag.
Further down the list, Pep Guardiola is an eye-catching inclusion as well as Jurgen Klopp, who has left Liverpool few weeks ago looking for new challenges. The German manager has turned down an approach from the United States about their vacancy.
Guardiola's contract at the Etihad Stadium is set to expire in June 2025 and appointing the Spaniard will be a huge upgrade. He has already worked with many of the regular starters and have led Phil Foden to win the Premier League Player of the Year this season.
Other interesting candidates are Michael Carrick, Steve Holland, Frank Lampard who was last seen on the touchline at Stamford Bridge as an interim boss at The Blues while Josè Mourinho has taken up the Fenerbahce job earleir this summer and is unlikely to leave Istanbul so soon.
Another potential long shot is Ralf Rangnick who performed admirably as Austria’s boss at Euro 2024, guiding them to the knockout stages. The one-time Man United boss is available at appealing odds.Sarina Wiegman is not a surprising entry, having impressed with the Women's National Team in recent years. There has never been a woman in charge of a top division side in England, let alone the national team job, so it would be a huge move to appoint Wiegman to the role.
