Who Will Replace Jurgen Klopp? 5 Favourites To Replace The German
Jurgen Klopp will depart from Anfield after eight-and-a-half-year reign at the club. Given the prestige that comes with the role, there have been a number of high-profile names linked with the position already.
Xabi Alonso was the early favourite with the best betting sites. The former Liverpool midfielder (143 league caps with the Reds) has enjoyed a sensational season at Bayer Leverkusen. He has not lost any of the Bundesliga games so far and has secured the Meisterschale (the domestic title) with many games left.
There have been reports of a clause in his Leverkusen contract, allowing him to join one of his former clubs at the end of the season. These claims have been subsequently dismissed as the Spaniard has decided to remain at Leverkusen for the 2024/25 season.
The likes of Roger Schmidt and Rúben Amorim were also prominent in the betting. The pair are currently battling for top spot in Portugal, with Amorim's Sporting CP leading Benfica, who are managed by Schmidt. Anyway, Liverpool don't look interested in appointing them anymore.
With Xabi Alonso, Ruben Amorim and Roger Schmidt no longer the leading candidates, Liverpool has Feyenoord's head coach Arne Slot at the forefront of their search to find a replacement for Jürgen Klopp.
There's no release clause included into his contract but Feyenoord would request a compensation fee as they did with Tottenham one year ago. The compensation package for Arne Slot will cost Liverpool £7.7 million, with an additional £1.7 million in add-ons.
According to reports, Feyenoord have rejected Liverpool's €9m opening offer for Arne Slot. Despite initial bid not accepted, discussions remain ongoing with confidence.
The Dutchman is 1/4 to replace Jürgen Klopp at Anfield.
Second favorite is Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian was brought in after former boss Graham Potter joined Chelsea and has guided the club into European competitions for the first time ever.
The Seagulls, who finished 6th last year in the Premier League table, are playing brilliant football and have reached the knockout stages of the Europa League.
The Reds have never been led by an Italian head coach in the club's history but Roberto De Zerbi's style of play would suit Liverpool very well.
Third in the betting is Klopp's right-hand man, Pep Lijnders. He as been with Liverpool since 2014 except for a short period in 2018 when he failed to gain promotion to the Eredivisie with NEC. Lijnders currenlty is among the backroom staff who will be leaving when the German departs at the end of the season. But despite that, he is still among the contenders to replace Klopp.
Other candidates for Liverpool job
In addition to Arne Slot and Roberto De Zerbi, Ange Postecoglu and Zinedine Zidane have also emerged as dark horses. After winning the Treble in his final campaign at Celtic Glasgow, the former took little time to transform Tottenham in a title-contender and he would no doubt do a great job at Anfield.
Zidane has won three Champions Leagues and two La Liga titles across two spells as Real Madrid manager but he is untested outside of Madrid.
Former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has made no secret of his desire to manage his old club. He managed Rangers and won the Scottish Premiership in 2021 but an ill-fated spell at Aston Villa has since damaged his managerial reputation. That will count against Gerrard for sure.
The former Liverpool midfielder is now in charge of Al-Ettifaq (who sit 8th in the Saudi Pro League in Saudi Arabia) and recently signed a new contract extension.
In the last few days one of the most backed candidates to succeed Klopp is Julian Nagelsmann. He has taken over as the manager of the German national team but his contract will expire after the European Championship this summer. He has enjoyed success at RB Leipzig and won a Bundesliga title at Bayern Munich in the 2021/22 campaign.
He is seen as one of the brightest young managerial talents and this makes Julian Nagelsmann a serious contender.
Other names to have climbed up the betting since the market opened are Unai Emery, Thomas Frank, Graham Potter and Xavi Hernandez (but Xavi will not leave FC Barcelona at the end of this season as previously stated).
Long shots?
Former Chelsea's boss Graham Potter, current Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi, Bayern's Thomas Tuchel, Italy's Luciano Spalletti and Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone are not top choices but can't be ruled out.
Josè Mourinho, Antonio Conte, Luis Enrique, Julen Lopetegui, Brendan Rodgers, Eddie Howe, Frank Lampard, Gareth Southgate, Rafa Benitez, Erik Ten Haag and Kieran McKenna are outsiders.

What have Liverpool won under Jurgen Klopp?
The German manager joined the Merseysiders in 2015 and led the club to their first ever Premier League title during the 2019/20 campaign. Under his guidance, the Reds have also won the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup.
Despite winning the 2022 Community Shield, a League Cup and a FA Cup too, Klopp's time at Anfield has included its fair share of heartbreaks for Liverpool fans - notably two Champions League final defeats to Real Madrid.
