CARL FRAMPTON v LEO SANTA CRUZ: BETTING PREVIEW

At 23-0 with world titles in two weight classes already, Carl Frampton is firmly established among the elite handful of fighters. He was last seen getting the better of Mexican Santa Cruz in New York last summer courtesy of a majority decision with one judge scoring it 114-114. The "Jackal" was the busier of the two early on, using countless movement and combinations to bank rounds whilst also nullifying Santa Cruz in close. Prior to that bout Frampton defeated fellow unbeaten boxer Scott Quigg at 122 pounds in February.

Frampton will enter the ring Saturday with the same advantages in hand and foot speed that allowed him to succeed the first time around. He has short arms for such a world-class fighter, but a robust defence, which means he doesn't actually have to take as many shots as you might expect. The Jackal will look to box at range, move around, and utilise his jab against the Mexican.

Carl Frampton's last 5 fights:

  • WIN vs Leo Santa Cruz – MD
  • WIN vs Scott Quigg – SD
  • WIN vs Alejandro Gonzalez Jnr – UD
  • WIN vs Chris Avalos – TKO fifth round
  • WIN vs Kiko Martinez – UD

Three-division world champion Santa Cruz (32-1-1, 18 KOs) lost his unbeaten record at the fists of Frampton last time and invoked the rematch clause hours after his defeat. Despite showing a 53 per cent knockout average, Santa Cruz has halted just one opponent in his last four, and that was Kiko Martinez (TKO 5th round). Prior to that, the Mexican beat Abner Mares by majority decision, Jose Cayetano by uninamous decision and Jesus Ruiz by TKO 8th round.

Santa Cruz is the bigger man, with the longer reach (69" to 62") and a two-and-a-half-inch height advantage. The general consensus is that "El Terremoto" is considerably better prepared to fight with his opponent this time around after the revival of his coach and father, Jose. The Mexican showed in patches in their first fight the power, variety and velocity in punching he does possess.

Leo Santa Cruz's last 5 fights:

  • LOSS vs Carl Frampton – MD
  • WIN vs Kiko Martinez – TKO fifth round
  • WIN vs Abner Mares – MD
  • WIN vs Jose Cayetano – UD
  • WIN vs Jesus Ruiz – TKO eighth round
