PERTEMPS FINAL HANDICAP BETTING PREVIEW
The Pertemps Final Hurdle is a handicap race and is run on the Thursday of the Cheltenham Festival after being served by several trial races throughout the National Hunt season. It's a Grade 3 handicap hurdle over nearly three miles, for horsers aged five years old and upwards. Many outsiders have claimed glory in the race in the past.
The Pertemps Final Handicap has produced several big priced winners in recent years with the average SP of around 20/1 since the year 2000, so clearly this is a bookmaker friendly handicap (where stakes are best kept to a minimum).
And now we take a closer look at this year's Pertemps Final Handicap and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.
Who will win the Pertemps Final Handicap 2024?
GAOTH CHUIL who finished a close second behind Maxxum in the Leopardstown qualifier, is currently the market leader.
SPRINGWELL BAY was 6th in a Grade 1 at Aintree last April not beaten that far by the very talented Irish Point. The Jonjo O'Neil inmate has had three starts this season and has been narrowly beaten the last twice over 3 miles.
Willie Mullins' ICARE ALLEN ut up some notable performances in defeat in competitive handicaps in Ireland through the summer and was then third in an Aintree qualifier for this race.
Experienced campaigner CHANTRY HOUSE - Festival winner over fences in 2021 and also a Grade 2 victor at this venue in that sphere - could be a fascinating runner for Nicky Henderson while CLEATUS POOLAW is well supported in the betting after qualifying in straight forward fashion. With just four starts under his belt, he has already won a Naas maiden (2m2½f, soft) in January and then clear second at the same venue.
Henderson has also entered HYLAND who has scored at Cheltenham this season and could be joined in the final by stablemate BOLD ENDEAVOUR, who finished fifth in last season's Coral Cup.
POPOVA has won only twice in 10 attempts over hurdles but her last performance - a 4th at Punchestown in a November qualifier for this race - was impressive.Henry De Bromhead's GABBYS CROSS finished second in a couple of hurdles races at Galway and Punchestown toward the end of 2023, latterly booking his place in this year's Pertemps renewal.

Dark horses?
LE MILOS for Dan Skelton looks a horse capable to deliver a major surprise at double-digit odds for a trainer who can plot a handicapper better than anyone.
LORD SNOOTIE was second in a qualifier at Haydock a couple of weeks ago. He is rated in the mid-120s, so his chances of getting in are slim enough.
KYNTARA has really worked wonders with this horse since taking over from Kim Bailey. He has had four runs for the new yard, with two wins and two very good 2nd placed efforts. He was rated 118 for Kim Bailey, and now he is a 131-rated horse, and has qualified for the Pertemps Final with a decent, but very unlucky 2nd at Warwick.
MILL GREEN has jumped the last hurdle in front only to be picked off late on and finish third in the last two renewals of the Pertemps Final and enters this year's renewal on the back of an encouraging run in the Exeter qualifier. He is only off a 2lb higher mark than when finishing third in the last two renewals.
GOWEL ROAD, who finished 7th in a competitive 2022 Coral Cup, was just 2 lengths behind Crambo when giving that rival a pound on his comeback after a year off the track at Haydock. He subsequently recorded a respectable run in Grade 1 company next time out and qualified in 4th place at Exeter on ground much softer than ideal.
Other long-shots with top 4 ambitions are Jonjo O'Neill's JUDICIAL LAW, NOBLE BIRTH and ALPESH AMIN for Emmet McNamara, Alan King's EMITOM and MONMIRAL for Paul Nicholls, a winner of 5 races out of 10 over hurdles and second in an Aintree Grade 1 over 2m4f in 2022 who also finished 4th at Chepstow last month.
At the moment, the most backed horses are the following:

"I’m with my Dad’s mare Gaoth Chuil. She will definitely stay and Shane O’Callaghan takes off a 5lb claim. He’ll take his time on her and make a move late on. I’m hoping she can run into the money."2024 PERTEMPS FINAL HANDICAP FREE BETS
