SUPREME NOVICES BETTING PREVIEW
The Supreme Novices' Hurdle is a popular race amongst punters as they try and get off to a winning start at the Cheltenham Festival. It’s a Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle contest, run over two miles and half-a-furlong, for horses aged four years and upwards. Marine National from Barry Connell won the 2023 edition under the guidance of the Michael O’Sullivan, at a starting price of 9/2.
And now we take a closer look at this year's Skybet Supreme Novices' Hurdle and try to determine which horse is likely to prevail.
Who will win the Supreme Novices' 2024? The ante-post betting is rightfully headed by BALLYBURN, who coped with the two mile distance really well. He is well supported in this race after blitzing the field in the Grade 1 Tattersalls Ireland 50th Derby Sale Novice Hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival. The six-year-old won by a seven-length margin over the 2m distance and left behind a couple of notable horses, including Henry De Bromhead's Slade Steel.
TULLYHILL was slashed in the betting a couple of weeks ago as the well-fancied 6/5 favourite cruised to an emphatic nine-length victory in a Listed contest at Punchestown.
MYSTICAL POWER stretched his unbeaten record to three victories from three starts when returning an impressive winner of the Grade 2 Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle at Punchestown. There still looks to be plenty of improvement in the bay gelding.
JP McManus will also be represented in the race with the Nicky Henderson-trained JERIKO DU REPONET who arrives here on the back of two wins in a row, including on his hurdle/stable debut at Newbury in December. His hopes were strengthened further when claiming the spoils at Doncaster in January, fending off Lump Sum to win by a length-and-a-quarter.
FIREFOX was excellent when seeing off Ballyburn at Fairyhouse back in December. He was subsequently upped to 2m4f in a Grade 1 Novice Hurdle at Naas, where he struggled to stay the distance and could only finish fourth.
Dark horses?SLADE STEEL is a solid performer as shown when winning a blisteringly fast run race on maiden hurdle debut at Naas, and then a sprinting over the last two hurdles on desperate ground in the 2m4f Grade 2 at Navan in early December. He recently did his chances no harm when finishing second behind Ballyburn in the Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown.
MISTERGIF was unable to win in 11 starts in France but made a big impression when winning by 18 lengths on his Irish debut in a maiden at Limerick in January.
Alan King's FAVOUR AND FORTUNE finished second at Aintree on Boxing Day in a strong field (the first and third were subsequently placed in the Grade 2 at Kelso recently). He then stepped up on that at Exeter, giving 10lb to a Willie Mullins' mare, being beaten only half a length on not favourable ground.
At the moment, the most backed horses are the following:
