England vs Argentina betting preview

England have won the last 9 encounters against the Pumas

England are now in a strong position to qualify for the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals as winners of their pool. They have done the easy part by picking up bonus-point wins over United States (45-7) and Tonga (35-3), running in 11 tries in those two matches. There is still plenty to do to secure top spot in the pool which at the moment would probably lead to a quarter final clash with Australia. Their defence has looked extremely strong but this will be a significant step up and will tell us much more about the development of England as World Cup contenders.

England have a full squad of 31 to pick from and had a ten-day gap since their last outing. Arguably the most significant news is the return of wing Jack Nowell and prop Billy Vunipola on the bench. George Ford starts at fly-half again with captain Owen Farrell set to continue at inside centre for the rest of the tournament. Meanwhile, Piers Francis will be facing disciplinary action after completing a high-tackle while lock George Kruis is preferred to Courtney Lawes .

England Starting Line-up

England: 15 Elliot Daly, 14 Anthony Watson, 13 Manu Tuilagi, 12 Owen Farrell (c), 11 Jonny May, 10 George Ford, 9 Ben Youngs, 8 Billy Vunipola, 7 Sam Underhill, 6 Tom Curry, 5 George Kruis, 4 Maro Itoje, 3 Kyle Sinckler, 2 Jamie George, 1 Joe Marler

Replacements: 16 Luke Cowan-Dickie, 17 Mako Vunipola, 18 Dan Cole, 19 Courtney Lawes, 20 Lewis Ludlam, 21 Willi Heinz, 22 Henry Slade, 23 Jack Nowell

Argentina have lost 10 of their last 11 matches

Argentina narrowly lost their opening match to France. They were unlucky to narrowly lose by a scoreline of 21-23, given the second-half heroics that almost saw them sink the French. In their last match they ended a 10-match losing streak with a 28-12 victory over Tonga at Hanazono Rugby Stadium. The majority defeats have come against some of the world’s strongest sides in All Blacks, Springboks, Wallabies and Ireland. Prior to that, thety had passed the 20-point mark just twice – that 2018 defeat to the Wallabies and their 23-21 reverse to France in their opening pool match in Japan. Los Pumas have made the knockout stages in each of the last three tournaments, including a run to the semi-finals four years ago in England

Argentina have no major injury concerns heading into this huge clash and have made one change to the starting XV that claimed a vital win over Tonga in their last match. The return of Nicolas Sanchez and former captain Augustin Creevy may provide Argentina with more attacking power and maul. Javier Ortega Desio will slot in at number eight, replacing Tomas Lezana. Desio started the first match while Lezana took his place for the Tonga match.

Argentina Starting Line-up

Argentina: 15 Emiliano Boffelli, 14 Matías Moroni, 13 Matias Orlando, 12 Jeronimo de la Fuente, 11 Santiago Carreras, 10 Benjamin Urdapilleta, 9 Tomas Cubelli, 8 Javier Ortega Desio, 7 Marcos Kremer, 6 Pablo Matera (c), 5 Tomas Lavanini, 4 Guido Petti Pagadizabal, 3 Juan Figallo, 2 Julian Montoya, 1 Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro

Replacements: 16 Agustín Creevy, 17 Mayco Vivas, 18 Santiago Medrano, 19 Matias Alemanno, 20 Tomas Lezana, 21 Felipe Ezcurra, 22 Lucas Mensa, 23 Bautista Delguy
