ENGLAND v WALES BETTING PREVIEW England ran out 35-11 winners against Fiji in their opening Pool A match last Friday but the Red Rose team looked nervous, disorganised and uncertain for 60 minutes. Coach Stuart Lancaster’s inspired substitutions allowed England to subdue a resolute and dangerous Fijian side, albeit only securing a try bonus point with the last play of the game.

Lancaster has opted to make a number of changes this weekend with Sam Burgess, given the role of outside centre alongside Saracens midfielder Brad Barritt. Owen Farrell starts at flyhalf in place of the demoted George Ford. while Jonathan Joseph and Morgan are both out through injury.  Billy Vunipola impressed off the bench against Fiji and has been recalled in the starting XV.

Wales recorded a comfortable 54-9 win over Uruguay - who, remember, do not have a single professional rugby player in their national side - in Cardiff last Sunday, running in eight tries after Uruguay had scored with two early penalties to take a 6-0 lead. They will undoubtedly have to show significant improvement from last week. Dan Biggar will still be under huge pressure to match the injured Leigh Halfpenny's productivity off the kicking tee.

Wales’ injury crisis continuing to worsen with Paul James, Samson Lee and Sunday’s hat-trick hero Corey Allen all being forced off with injuries – with Allen potential out of the rest of the World Cup with a “significant” hamstring injury .Full-back Liam Williams has recovered from a slight knock to his thigh and will line up at the back, while George North and Hallam Amos are preferred on the wings. Furthermore, Warren Gatland has named Gareth Davies at scrum-half with Lloyd Williams on the bench meaning Mike Phillips will not take part. Exeter Chief Tomas Francis starts at tighthead with Scott Baldwin at hooker and Gethin Jenkins at loosehead while Hallam Amos starts on the right wing instead of Alex Cuthbert.

England have won the last two between the sides, but the Welsh won the three prior to that. The last direct match saw England beat Wales 21-16 when the teams met in the Six Nations in Cardiff in February.

Recent meetings:

  • 2015: England won 21-16 in Cardiff
  • 2014: England won 29-18 at Twickenham
  • 2013: Wales won 30-3 in Cardiff
  • 2012: Wales won 19-12 in London
