England vs Slovakia Betting Preview
Despite clinching top spot in Group C, England failed to impress and the hype surrounding them has all but evaporated on the back of three uninspiring performances. Gareth Southgate's men triumphed over Serbia with a narrow 1-0 margin before settling for a 1-1 draw against Denmark and a goalless stalemate versus Slovenia on matchday three. Their attacking prowess appears to have waned, as they currently hold the statistical record for the slowest offensive play in Euro 2024. However, as the champions of Group C, England find themselves positioned favorably on the tournament bracket, with the likes of Germany, France, Spain, and Portugal battling it out in other half.Slovakia secured their place in the Round of 16 as one of the best third-placed teams from Group E, in which each team ended up on four points. They stunned Belgium in the opening game beating the Red Devils 2-1, only to be thwarted by Ukraine in a 2-1 defeat and held to a 1-1 draw against the group winners, Romania. It is worth noting that Slovakia, led by the Italian manager Francesco Calzona, are brilliant up front having scored 24 goals in their past 12 international matches, albeit against easier opposition.
In terms of direct encounters, England have been dominant in their encounters with Slovakia, winning five out of six matches, and three of those victories have come with a 2-1 scoreline. The only time England failed to defeat Slovakia was during their meeting at Euro 2016, where Slovakia successfully held them to a goalless draw in the group stage.
Best Odds
England are heavy favourites to win this clash at 5/11 with VBet. Quinnbet offer 7/2 for the draw while "Slovakia to win" is backable at 9/1 with BetMGM.
Probable Line-Ups
England (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Walker, Guehi, Stones, Trippier; Rice, Mainoo; Saka, Bellingham, Foden; Kane
The main question mark for England revolves around Phil Foden's availability, as he had recently become a father for the third time. It remains uncertain if he will be able to train and be fully prepared to start. In the event of his absence, Anthony Gordon could potentially step in on the left flank. Conor Gallagher's lackluster performance on Tuesday suggests that he may be replaced by Kobbie Mainoo. Despite a slightly lackluster tournament, there is no indication that Harry Kane will be dropped from the starting lineup in favor of Ollie Watkins. Luke Shaw, who has been battling fitness issues, and has not played since February may make a comeback as a substitute.
Slovakia (4-3-3): Dubravka; Pekarik, Vavro, Skriniar, Hancko; Kucka, Lobotka, Duda; Schranz, Bozenik, Haraslin
Slovakia made one change to their line-up for the Romania game as David Strelec replaced Robert Bozenik up front. However, it seems that Bozenik may make a comeback in Gelsenkirchen, having started the first two games. The midfield trio of Juraj Kucka, Stanislav Lobotka, and Ondrej Duda will remain unchanged, while the impact made by Tomas Suslov off the bench may not be enough to overtake Haraslin on the Falcons' left flank.
England v Slovakia Predictions
We do not expect a high scoring affair. In their last eight international matches, England has only managed to score multiple goals twice. They have attempted a mere 28 shots on goal in the first three matches of Euro 2024, a lower tally than most teams, including Georgia, Serbia, Slovenia, and Scotland. While they rank third-worst in expected goals (2.2 xG), they are also the best team in terms of expected goals against.
Nevertheless, even though the Three Lions may lack balance and rhythm, they can get the job done in Gelsenkirchen. Therefore, we predict an England victory by a narrow margin of 1-0.
When it comes to committing fouls, Ondrej Duda is among the leaders here at Euro 2024, with only two players having committed more. Therefore, we anticipate the 29-year-old midfielder committing 2+ fouls in this match.
