Netherlands vs Austria Betting Preview
Netherlands have not quite clicked in the final third but a goalless draw with France following a 2-1 win over Poland (courtesy of Wout Weghorst’s dramatic late winner) puts them in the driving seat to top Group D for now. The Dutch currently have the advantage and lead Austria by a point, as well as France on goal difference. They will finish in the top two and book a place in the last 16 if they avoid defeat against Austria. If they win and better France's result against Poland elsewhere in Group D, the Oranje will top the group.
Austria narrowly lost 1-0 against France in their opening group game before beating Poland 3-1 in the second outing. Ralf Rangnick's side can only finish in the top two if they defeat the Netherlands. They will actually win Group D if they take maximum points and France do not. Even defeat against the Dutch may be enough to see them through as one of the four best third-placed teams, though a heavy defeat could jeopardise their chances.
Netherlands have won 10 of the 20 previous direct encounters with Austria, including each of the last seven. These two sides last met in the group stage of Euro 2020, when Memphis Depay and Denzel Dumfries both scored on home soil in Amsterdam in a 2-0 win that sent the Oranje through to the last 16.Best Odds
Netherlands are favourites to win this clash (21/20 with Ladbrokes). BetMGM offer 23/10 for the draw while "Austria to win" is backable at 16/5 with Betfred.Probable Line-Ups
Netherlands (4-2-3-1): Verbruggen; Dumfries, De Vrij, Van Dijk, Ake; Reijnders, Schouten; Frimpong, Simons, Gakpo; Depay
Ronald Koeman should have a full squad at his disposal for the Netherlands' final group fixture. Ajax forward Brian Brobbey was back on the bench after a hamstring injury, while Jeremie Frimpong for Joey Veerman was Koeman’s only change on Friday. Wout Weghorst, who scored a late winner against Poland on matchday one, is pushing for a start but Memphis Depay is likely to retain his starting berth upfront.
Austria (4-2-3-1): Pentz; Posch, Danso, Lienhart, Mwene; Seiwald, Laimer; Wimmer, Baumgartner, Sabitzer; Gregoritsch
Rangnick has tried two different central defensive pairings in two games in his 4-2-3-1 set-up. He preferred Max Wober and Kevin Danso against France and Gernot Trauner and Philipp Lienhart against the Poles. Veteran Marko Arnautovic also replaced Michael Gregoritsch up front on Friday nut he is unlikely to retain his starting berth after scoring from the penalty spot. Elsewhere, Patrick Wimmer could get a run out from the start after only appearing off the bench for the Poland win.
Netherlands v Austria Predictions
The Netherlands should be very wary of Austria, who have impressed in both games so far in Group D despite their narrow loss to France.
The Dutch have lost only one of their last nine internationals, winning seven times. They looked rock-solid at the back but their first two opponents have been missing their star strikers, Poland's Robert Lewandowski and France's Kylian Mbappe.
Austria boast an identical record of seven wins and just one loss in their last nine. A draw would almost certainly see both sides progress to the round of 16, but it's unlikely that either Koeman or Rangnick would be willing to see their side settle for a point.
Anyway, we do not expect a goal-fest here, but we back Netherlands to win by a narrow margin. 1-0 and 2-1 are our favourites scorelines in the Correct score market.
We also fancy Denzel Dumfries to have 1+ shots on target.
