2024 Grand National Runners - The Final list
The Grand National is UK's annual horse race that stops the nation. This year's edition will be an extra special running of the greatest steeplechase in the world after Corach Rambler turned 21-year-old Cameron Sword into the youngest winning owner in the race’s long history.Lucinda Russell's stable star grabbed the lead over the last hurdle and then pulled away from a final test launched by two greys, Vanillier and Gaillard Du Mesnil, who finished second and third.
The 2024 Grand National will be held at Aintree Racecourse on Saturday 13th April at 4pm, having been brought forward from 5.15pm after controversy in the 2023 edition. Sponsored by Randox Health, it is a UK handicap steeplechase over 4 miles 514 yards with horses jumping 30 fences over two laps.
The £1 million showpiece is again set to feature a maximum field of 34 after 50 entries stood their ground at Monday's declaration stage.

Who are the Grand National favorites?
CORACH RAMBLER will try to retain his crown on the back of a convincing third-place finish at the Cheltenham Gold Cup. This year he will be carrying a huge 13lbs more, but despite that, he has leapt to favouritism and is arguably in the form of his life.2023 Irish Grand National winner I AM MAXIMUS jumped to second favourite when beating former antepost favourite and last year's second placed horse Vanillier easily in the BobbyJo Chase at Fairyhouse.
Having finished runner-up in the race last year behind Corach Rambler, VANILLIER will be hoping to go one better this year. He has just five pounds more to carry this season.
MEETINGOFTHEWATERS is fresh of a decent third-place finish in the Ultima at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival. He also won the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown, besting Grand National market rival Panda Boy in the process.
PANDA BOY was last seen finishing fourth out of 22 runners at the Dublin Racing Festival. He has run four times this season and finished in the top four on each occasion.
KITTY'S LIGHT is an experienced and proven stayer over marathon trips. Last year’s Scottish National-Bet365 Gold Cup hero only finished seventh in the Ultima Handicap Chase but an extended break could see him return to his best.
What are the Grand National Reserves?
The Grand National generally has a big number of reservers to late withdrawals and non runners. Anyway, for the first time ever a maximum field of 34 runners will be allowed to run on the Aintree fences (reduced from the usual total of 40 in an attempt to make the contest safer for horses and riders), with the final declarations revealed at 10am on Thursday. The remaining horses - the lowest rated ones that don't make the cut - will be balloted out 48 hours before the contest.
There will be no reserves this year.
What is the final list of Grand National runners?
The initial entry date is at the end of January and then there are further stages through to the Grand National day when runners need to be confirmed at declaration stages which are sometimes called forfeit stages. At each stage a runners connections may need to pay a further entry fee to confirm their runner.
The last declaration stage takes place at 10am on the Thursday before the race at which point the top 34 runners in the weights are left in along with four reserves.
- Entries closes January 29
- Entries revealed January 30 (94 entries)
- Weights revealed in mid-February
- First scratchings deadline March 5
- Second scratchings deadline March 21
- Five-day confirmations April 8
- Final declarations 10am April 11.
- Final confirmation 1pm April 12
Grand National Non Runner No Bet
Non Runner No Bet is relatively simple concept to understand and well worth taking on any ante-post bet should it be offered. The offer allows you to place a bet on a horse in the build up to the race and if it doesn’t make the starting gates, you’ll receive your stake money back.
What this does is essentially void your bet if your horse doesn’t run, meaning you don’t lose any money for no real reason.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the Grand National 2024?
The National is the highlight of Aintree's Grand National meeting at Aintree Racecourse in Merseyside, which this year runs from Thursday, April 11 to Saturday, April 13. The 2024 Grand National takes place at 4.00pm on Saturday.
What is the Grand National?
It's the most famous horse race on the planet with a £1 million prize pool.
The race is open to horses aged 7 and older with a handicap of 120 or higher. All entries must also have finished in the first four in a chase of 3 miles or longer.
30 fences are generally taken by a 40-runners field over a trip just short of 4¼ miles but these year there will be 34 horses for safety reasons.
The race hasn't been without drama during its history. The 1993 renewal was infamously voided due to a false start. In 1997 the race was moved on Monday after an IRA bomb scare cancelled the original race on the Saturday, while there was only four finishers in a particularly attritional 2001 renewal. The event was cancelled for the first time in its 180-year history in 2020 due to health concerns surrounding the outbreak of Covid-19.
How to bet on the Grand National?
Betting on the Grand National is many people’s only wager of the year so can prove confusing for many who look to navigate through online bookmakers and each horse racing market.
But it really doesn’t need to be a hardship and betting on horse racing can be incredibly simple, particularly the Aintree Grand National.
The entire process of placing a bet on the Grand National can be done in just a few clicks. Learn here how to bet a horse on the Grand National!
What TV channel is the Grand National on?
You can watch all the action live on ITV1 and Racing TV.
How many horses run the Grand National
A maximum field of 40-runners generally head to post on race day. But this year the field has been reduced to 34 horses for safety reasons. The 34 Grand National runner line-up, will be officially confirmed on April 11. There will be no reserves in case there are any late withdrawn runners. If horses withdraw and become non runners after Thursday's declaration then the field will start with less than 34 runners.
Who won the Grand National last year?
The 2023 Grand National was won by Corach Rambler at odds of 8/1 (we tipped it!). Lucinda Russell' charge, ridden Derek Fox, defeated the 20/1 shot Vanillier, the 10/1 Gaillard Du Mesnil and the 2022 winner Noble Yeats, who was priced 10/1. It was a second victory in the world’s greatest steeplechase for Russell and Fox, after One For Arthur in 2017.
What about Grand National non runners?
Horses may have injuries or ilnesses but there are a number of additional reasons. Some horses prefer certain ground conditions (eg. heavy ground) and if these aren't in place connections may decide not to run their horse. Some horses have multiple entries and may decid to run a different race (eg. the Irish Grand National that is run few weeks later).
Who is the most successful trainer in the Grand National
Three trainers have recorded four wins in this race - George Dockeray, Fred Rimell and Ginger McCain. McCain saddled Amberleigh House in 2004 to add to his three victories with legendary horse Red Rum (1973, 1974 and 1977), one of the few Grand National horse to have won the race over consecutive years.
Who is the most successful jockey in the Grand National?
George Stevens claimed the National five times back in the 19th century. His most recent victory was recorded in 1870.
What is the most famous fence at the course and other tricky fences?
The Becher's Brook is the most notorious obstacle over the National course. It is named after Captain Martin Becher, a jockey who fell at this stage and hid in the brook to avoid injury. Jumped as the 6th and 22nd fence, it may not be the biggest obstacle but its difficulty comes from the fact the landing side is 10 inches lower than the take off side.
Other famous Grand National fences are the Valentine's Brook (fence 9 & 25), the Chair (fence 15), Foinavon (fence 7 & 23), and Canal Turn (fence 8 & 24).
When are the Grand National weights revealed? How are weights determined?
During February each year all the Grand National entries are allotted running weights for the race. Weights are based on the official rating which the handicapper gives each of the horses entered.
Actually, each horse already has an official rating for use in handicaps but the Grand National official handicapper will adjust this where they think necessary to produce a rating just for this race.
What are the other notable Grand National?
The Irish Grand National is run at Fairyhouse on Easter Monday. The Scottish Grand National is run at Ayr towards the end of March or early April. The Welsh Grand National takes place at Chepstow Racecourse in December each year.
Are there any trials for the Grand National?
There are two big races in the UK which serve that defined purpose - the Becher Chase at Aintree in early December, and the Grand National Trial at Haydock every February.
Other races that are considered good preps are the Welsh National at Chepstow, the Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, the Grand Sefton Handicap Chase (which is a National Hunt Chase race run over the Grand National fences at Aintree), the Eider Chase at Newcastle, the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster, the Betfair Chase, and the Paddy Power chase. Moreover, the Bobbyjo Chase tends to be a target for Grand National runners in Ireland.
Has any horse won two Grand Nationals in the same year?
Red Rum was the champion of two grand nationals in 1974 when it won the Aintree showpiece and Scottish National. No other horse has previously won two nationals in the same year, though some horses won both races in different years.
Furthermore, no horses have won the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival and this marathon trip at Aintree.
