Things To Consider

There are a number of things to consider when backing newly promoted sides, with many different factors contributing to how successful a side will compete in a new league.

Some of the main factors to consider include:

Previous Season’s Form

How a side performed in the previous season will be a good indicator as to how they’ll be able to cope in the league above. A team who scraped through the playoffs will struggle a lot more than one who were comfortably crowned champions.
The playing style will also be a good indicator, particularly when moving from the Championship to Premier League for example, as there is generally a good level of difference. Wolves’ success in the 2018/19 season is a good example of that.

Transfer Activity

Most teams will look to strengthen following promotion to a new league. They’ll look for players with experience of that division and ones that can provide that extra bit of quality to ensure survival.

Monitoring a team’s transfer activity will allow you to assess whether you should be backing a newly promoted team in the relegation odds or promotion/top six. Research the players that have been brought in and how much they have spent. Do be wary though, Fulham were relegated last term despite spending over £100 million, making wholesale changes to their starting 11.

Managerial/Player Changes

After a successful season and promotion, newly promoted teams are often raided by bigger teams, signing up the team’s star striker or even manager. Without them, they could prove to be an entirely different side, particularly if it’s a player that a system is built around.

This could mean you’re looking at the relegation markets more than any top half odds.

Off The Field Activity

Happenings off the field can largely dictate how a team performs on it and if there is unrest at the club it can have a seriously damaging effect.

Take Bury for example. They finished the 2018/19 season second in League Two, securing automatic promotion. All season they were fantastic, but off the field the club are in financial ruin. They’ve been locked out of their training ground, have a new manager and failed to pay players during the back end of the season and in the offseason.

That led to the bookmakers making them huge favourites to face relegation, with Paddy Power pricing them at 2/9 to face the drop before the season had even started.

Equally, if a club has seen significant investment over the last few seasons, plans might be in place to use their financial clout to really push on for back-to-back promotions.

The Rest Of The Teams In The Division

Consider the teams already in the division and their teams, circumstances and form. For example, if other teams are struggling financially or were lucky to survive last season, you may fancy the chances of the newly promoted side more.

Equally, if there are few real contenders for promotion, you may back the newly promoted team to earn promotion again.
