There are no reported injuries or suspensions for manager Alberto Zaccheroni. Hotaru Yamaguchi should start once more in midfield, though may be partnered by Yasuhito Endo in the middle of the park.
Greece were also defeated in their opening match, going down 3-0 against Colombia. So with their goal difference taking a more significant knock, they are arguably in even deeper trouble. The Greek team has now won just one of their last six matches played and six of their seven World Cup games.
Fernando Santos could make a couple of changes to his side. Fulham striker Kostas Mitroglou will be hoping to earn a a place in the starting XI while Ioannis Fetfatzidis could push for a start. Panagiotis Kone is likely to keep his place in the side after impressing against Colombia.
These two teams have only met once before in history and that was in the 2005 Confederations Cup. It was Japan who took a 1-0 win on that occasion. reece have only faced Asian opponents once before at the World Cup, and on that occasion they lost 2-0 against South Korea four years ago at South Africa 2010.
Greece’s backline must also return to his qualifying round form, when it let up six goals in 12 matches. For this reason, we expect a low scoring game.
Greece (4-5-1): Karnezis; Maniatis, Manolas, Samaras, Kone; Salpingidis, Torosidis, Gekas, Sokratis, Cholevas; Mitroglou.
