CONOR MCGREGOR v EDDIE ALVAREZ: BETTING PREVIEW
Conor McGregor (20-3) dispatched Jose Aldo in 13 seconds at UFC 194 to become the undisputed featherweight champion. Since then he fought Nate Diaz twice. The Irishman suffered his first UFC defeat at the hands of Nate Diaz back in March - via a second-round submission - before winning the rematch on a majority decision in August. Both fights were at the heavier welterweight category. McGregor is the biggest name in the UFC at the moment and he can became the first UFC fighter ever to hold two titles at the same time.
McGregor is an aggressive, dangerous puncher with a great deal of craft and depth to his game. He excels at sticking his opponent on the end of his long reach, staying just out of range and then firing off a single left hand at a time. His ground game is still a point of concern for most pundits, but he has excelled at defending takedowns along the cage. Endurance has to be another concern for McGregor, as he seemingly ran out of gas against Diaz in both of their fights. Many feel McGregor's natural division is lightweight (155 lbs) rather than featherweight (145) or welterweight (170), so this is a great chance to see his real potential.
Eddie Alvarez (28-4) made the jump to the UFC in 2014 and bounced back from a decision defeat to Donald Cerrone - his lone loss in UFC - in his debut by battling to split decision wins over Anthony Pettis and Gilbert Melendez. He became the lightweight champion few months ago upsetting Rafael Dos Anjos via first-round knockout at UFC Fight Night 90. He blasted the Brazilian with a brutal right hand to set up the finishing flurry.
Eddie Alvarez is a solid striker and certainly capable of exchanging with McGregor. He is even better when he can draw his opponent onto his counters. He does his best work on the feet and utilizes a variety of different strategies depending on who's standing in front of him. He is not the best defensive fighter in terms of avoiding shots, but he's one of the best at turning his defense into offense. Anyway, Alvarez has always been prone to eating big shots and getting dropped, and McGregor is one of the most dangerous punchers in the sport.
