MOTO GP VALENCIA - BETTING PREVIEW
A dramatic clash between Rossi and Marc Marquez in Malaysia last month has dominated the headlines. The Italian and the Spaniard dueled ferociously for 7 laps, before the number 46 seemed to deliberately push his opponent wide. The Honda rider hit the deck. Marquez claimed he was kicked, Rossi claimed his movement was a reaction to Marquez's head.
As result, the 22 year-old Honda driver was sent sprawling while the Yamaha driver finished 3rd, collecting 16 crucial championship points. Lorenzo showed his feelings towards the Rossi/Marquez incident on the podium by giving the Italian the thumbs down.
Officials penalized Rossi and this means he will start from the back of the grid in Valencia. The atmosphere between the two Yamaha men remains frosty at best and the usual pre-race press conference was canceled.
Now Jorge Lorenzo is best priced at 4/9 to win the title with BetVictor while Valentino Rossi is backable at 15/8 at Boylesports.
Both Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo have won here in Valencia, and both men have lost championships here. Nine-time world champions Valentino Rossi is the current championship leader, holding a seven-point advantage over Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo. If the riders finish the season level on points, Lorenzo will win the title on account of having claimed more wins.
So the following are the possible scenarios:
- If Lorenzo wins, Rossi must finish second to take the title.
- If Lorenzo finishes second, then Rossi must take third.
- If Lorenzo finishes third, Rossi must finish sixth or better.
- If Lorenzo takes fourth, then Rossi needs to finish at least ninth or better.
- If Lorenzo finishes fifth to ninth, then Rossi must finish no more than six places further back.
- If Lorenzo finishes below ninth, Rossi will be world champion.
Along with the rejuvenated Pedrosa, the Honda duo are expected to be the only riders who have the tools to beat Lorenzo on Sunday. But they are both Spanish and Marc Marquez is Lorenzo's best allied as shown in Sepang. He clearly helped his countryman by slowing him down on the Malaysian track intentionally and allowing Lorenzo to build a substantial gap. So, we don't expect the Honda duo to create problems to Lorenzo.
Anyway, Rossi is unlikely to encounter much resistance from the grid but what will happen when Rossi reaches Marquez? And what about the two Italian riders, Dovizioso and Iannone, who could potentially do to Lorenzo what Marquez did to the Doctor?
Races at Valencia are rarely straightforward, throwing up startling results more often than not. Throw in a spot of unpredictable weather, and anything can truly happen. Pedrosa has thrice won at the circuit, with Márquez on top in 2014. But they will not drive at the best of their possibilities.
