New Zealand vs Ireland betting preview

New Zealand have looked very good in their three matches to date

New Zealand are looking to make to extend their unbeaten run at World Cups that stretches all the way back to 2007. They were faultless in their pool matches, winning their crucial pool game against South Africa 23-13 in the opening round. That game against the Springboks showed that the Kiwis have the explosive power to put any side, and game, to bed in a matter of minutes. Then, the All Blacks racked up two wins – a 63-0 over Canada and 71-9 over Namibia – before their game with Italy was cancelled due to Typhoon Hagibis.

Two-time World Rugby player of the year Beauden Barrett starts at fullback to accommodate Richie Mo’unga at ten, while Kiwi star Sonny Bill Williams will start on the bench and fellow centre Ryan Crotty misses out altogether. The All Blacks also have a fully fit Brodie Retallick back. Jack Goodhue and Anton Leinert-Brown get the nod in the centres

Ireland have two wins over the All Blacks in their last three attempts

Ireland were beaten by the Japan in the opening match before eventually recovering to finish as Pool A runners-up. The matchup against the All Blacks, tournament favourites, is the penalty the Irish play for losing to host nation. Prior to that loss, the Boys in Green crushed Scotland. In the last two games, they comfortably accounted for minnows Russia and Samoa. The good news for Ireland coach Joe Schmidt is that his team’s defence has been outstanding - they have conceded just two tries in four matches. The Irish scored a 16-9 victory over the All Blacks in November of last year.

Twelve of Saturday’s starting XV also started in the 16-9 victory against the All Blacks last November. Schmidt drafted in Robbie Henshaw to replace Bundee Aki, banned for three matches for a high tackle in their final pool game against Samoa, at inside centre. Veteran Rory Best will skipper the team from hooker, with the experienced duo of Conor Murray and World Player of the Year Johnny Sexton named at half-back. Elsewhere Peter O’Mahony and Rob Kearney have come back into the back row and back three respectively.

Ireland Starting Line-up

15 Kurtley Beale, 14 Reece Hodge, 13 Jordan Petaia, 12 Samu Kerevi, 11 Marika Koroibete, 10 Christian Lealiifano, 9 Will Genia, 8 Isi Naisarani, 7 Michael Hooper (captain), 6 David Pocock, 5 Rory Arnold, 4 Izack Rodda, 3 Allan Alaalatoa, 2 Tolu Latu, 1 Scott Sio

Replacements: 16 Jordan Uelese, 17 James Slipper, 18 Taniela Tupou, 19 Adam Coleman, 20 Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, 21 Nic White, 22 Matt To'omua, 23 James O'Connor

New Zealand vs Ireland H2H

New Zealand have won 28 of their 31 Test meetings with Ireland (D1, L2). The only World Cup meeting occurred in 1995 when the All Blacks ran out 43 – 19 winners. Games in recent years between the two sides have been tight affairs, with no more than 12 points separating the sides in the last four encounters. Ireland have been a bogey team for the All Blacks in recent times, recording their only two victories over New Zealand in the past three contests in as many years.
