Anthony Joshua vs Jermaine Franklin Betting Preview
Anthony Joshua (24-3, 22 KOs) is searching for his first win since the brutal domination of Kubrat Pulev in 2020 as he comes into this contest on the back of two successive losses to unified champion Oleksandr Usyk. AJ was outpointed by Usyk in 2021, surrendering the unified world heavyweight titles in the process, and the unbeaten Ukrainian retained the belts with another decision win over Joshua last August. The British heavyweight has lost three of his last five fights, having also suffered a shocking defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr in 2019.
Joshua had Team GB coach Rob McCracken in his corner for most of his career, but brought in esteemed trainer of multiple world champions Robert Garcia for the rematch against Usyk. He has now decided to make another change linking up with Derrick James, who trains both undisputed super-welterweight champion Jermell Charlo, and unified welterweight titleholder Errol Spence Jr.
Jermaine Franklin brings a record of 21 wins, 14 KOs and 1 loss from his 22 pro bouts. He was last seen in the ring when he fought Dillian Whyte in the UK last November. The Michigan born fighter gave a good account of himself in a contest which some though he won despite losing on the judges' scorecards by majority decision.
It was Franklin's first fight outside the US. Previous to that, he had beat Jerry Forrest on 12th July 2019 by split decision in their 10 round contest. His resume also includes wins against Rydell Booker (UD), Craig Lewis (UD) and Ed Fountain (TKO). Franklin is now relishing his shot against one of the biggest names in the sport. The American has also spent a fortnight sparring with Britain’s undefeated WBC heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury at his Morecambe home.
Anthony Joshua v Jermaine Franklin: Who is the favorite?
On paper, this fight could be a big test for the former two-time heavyweight champion, despite the best UK betting sites heavily favouring Joshua.
One of the reason is that the Joshua has a height advantage of 4 inches over Franklin. This also extends to a 5-inch reach advantage.
Anthony Joshua vs Jermaine Franklin Odds
Joshua opened as the favourite at 1/12 while Franklin opened as a huge underdog at 6/1. At time of writing AJ is backable at 1/10 with BetVictor while the American is 8/1 to win the bout with Betfred. The draw is priced at 25/1 with Ladbrokes.
Joshua vs Franklin Predictions
Following his defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in August 2022, Joshua has reset and refocused. But clearly his career is effectively on the line.
Joshua is a huge puncher, and can end the fight with one shot. But he struggles with smaller guys. Moreover, his chin is questionable and Franklin also has power as shown in his last fight when he troubled Dillian White few months ago.
Joshua will need to have his guard up to catch some of his opponent's quick combinations, with AJ needing to avoid mistakes early in the fight and pull the trigger sooner and counter back.
Derrick James is an offensive-minded trainer, and we expect Joshua to attack despite a third consecutive defeat would be a total disaster.
Our prediction? With so much on the line, Joshua should be able to make a statement and hand his opponent his first professional knockout loss in central rounds (6th or 7th round).
