England vs Ukraine Betting Preview
England kicked off their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with an important 2-1 win away to Italy - courtesy of goals scored by Declan Rice and Harry Kane - earning a slice of revenge for their Euro 2020 final loss to Roberto Mancini's men. Gareth Southgate's men boast a 10 match winning streak in Euro qualifiers at home since drawing 2-2 with Switzerland in 2011. Since then, the Three Lions have scored 38 goals and conceded just 4 at home in qualifiers.
Ukraine narrowly missed the 2022 Qatar World Cup when losing to Wales 1-0 in the European play-offs. Recently they finished runner up to Scotland in their UEFA Nations League group (which also included Armenia and Ireland) with a W3 D2 L1 record. Ruslan Rotan's men are unbeaten in the last 10 European Qualifying matches, having suffered their last defeat in March 2015 (a narrow 1-0 loss to Spain).
As to direct encounters, England have only won two of their last five meetings against Sunday's opposition. Anyway, when the two national teams last met in the European Championship quarter final in June 2021, the Three Lions hammered Ukraine 4-0. Ukraine’s only win over England came in Dnipro during qualification for the 2010 World Cup, which was a dead rubber for the Three Lions.
Best Odds
England are heavy favorite to take all three points here. The best price is offered by BetUK at 27/100. An upset from Ukraine is priced at 12/1 with Ladbrokes while the draw is backable at 5/1 with Livescore Bet.
Probable Line-Ups
England (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire, Trippier; Henderson, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Foden; Kane
Luke Shaw is suspended for the Three Lions, leading to Ben Chilwell or Kieran Trippier likely earning a runout at left-back. The other changes could see Jordan Henderson replacing Kalvin Phillips, and Phil Foden replacing Jack Grealish. The likes of Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka are expected to retain their starting berth up front, while Jude Bellingham limped off in Naples and will be assessed ahead of this clash. Marcus Rashford and Mason Mount were both forced to pull out of the squad due to injuries.
Ukraine (4-3-3): Lunin; Karavayev, Matviyenko, Popov, Mykolenko; Malinovskyi, Stepanenko, Zinchenko; Yarmolenko, Dovbyk, Mudryk
Chelsea's Mykhailo Mudryk looks set to feature from the off alongside Artem Dovbyk in thre front trio. For the remaining berth, veteran Andriy Yarmolenko is a doubt due to a hamstring issue and is likely to make way to Girona winger Viktor Tsygankov. Arsenal's Oleksandr Zinchenko is expected to play in midfield, alongside Taras Stepanenko and Ruslan Malinovskyi. At the back, Denys Popov and Mykola Matvienko will fill the central roles, Oleksandr Karavaev and Vitalyi Mykolenko will start as full backs. Bournemouth centre-back Illia Zabarnyi is out through injury.
Our England vs Ukraine Predictions
We expect Ukraine to sit back and play for a draw, but England have enough quality to break the deadlock. After the first goal, we should see an open game in which the Three Lions will continuosly cause problems to a shaky Ukrainian defense.
As a result, we back England to win by 2+ goals and an Over 2.5 goals match.
The correct score could be a 4-1 win for the hosts with Harry Kane likely to improve his tally with the national team.
