Italy vs England Betting Preview
Italy were absent from Qatar in December having failed to qualify for the World Cup for a second time in a row. The Azzurri have a Nations League crown firmly within their sights after beating England, Hungary and Germany to top spot in League A Group 3. Roberto Mancini's men laso have a remarkable record in European qualifiers, as they are on home soil since suffering a 3-2 defeat against Denmark in 1999.
This will be England's first game since their defeat by France in the World Cup quarter-finals last year. A decent display in Qatar after an underwhelming Nations League campaign that saw the Three Lions finishing bottom of their group and being relegated in League B. England were drawn in the same Group with Italy and lost 1-0 when they last met. Gareth Southgate's men were also beaten on penalties by the Azzurri in the final of the last Euros in 2021.
Italy ran out 1-0 winners when these two met in the Nations League last year, courtesy of a goal scored by Giacomo Raspadori. The Three Lions have failed to beat Italy since a 2-1 friendly win in 2012, going six games without victory. This run also includes that infamous Euro 2020 final lost on penalties after the 1-1 draw. Four of the last five meetings between these sides have been draws after 90 minutes.
Best Odds
England are the slightly favorite here. Gareth Southgate's men are 13/8 to beat the Azzurri with Bet365.
Italy can be backed at 43/20 (with BetUK) with the draw currently available at 11/5 (with BetVictor).
Probable Line-Ups
Italy (4-3-3): Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Acerbi, Romagnoli, Spinazzola; Barella, Verratti, Jorginho; Berardi, Scamacca, Gnonto
Roberto Mancini has lost winger Federico Chiesa, left-back Federico Dimarco and goalkeeper Ivan Provedel. The trio joins Ciro Immobile and Giacomo Raspadori on the sideline, while Mattia Zaccagni and Niccolò Zaniolo have been overlooked. As a result, debutant Mateo Retegui and West Ham forward Gianluca Scamacca are in contention for the central striker role, while Willy Gnonto and Domenico Berardi are favorite over Lorenzo Pellegrini and Vincenzo Grifo to start out wide. Few doubts in midfield, where Jorginho, Nicolò Barella and Marco Verratti look sure starters. With Leonardo Bonucci not 100% fit, the likes of Alessio Romagnoli and Francesco Acerbi should start at the heart of the back, flanked by Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Leonardo Spinazzola.
England (4-3-3): Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Henderson, Rice, Bellingham; Saka, Kane, Sterling
Gareth Southgate has also lost a trio of players, with Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount and Nick Pope all pulling out with injuries. Harry Kane is expected to lead the line as usual, with Raheem Sterling and Bukayo Saka favorites over Phil Foden and Jack Grealish for the winger roles. The likes of Jordan Henderson, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice are expected to start in the middle of the park, while Harry Maguire will partner John Stones at the back. Kyle Walker should get the nod over Reece James as right back, Luke Shaw over Ben Chilwell as left-back.
Our Italy vs England Predictions
Italy have been faultless in their Euro qualifiers for over two decades. On the other side, the Three Lions have only lost one of their 27 major tournament qualifiers under Gareth Southgate.
England look like an estabilished team while Italy are still rebuilding after they miserably failed to qualify for Qatar 2022 and have plenty of attacking absences.
A low scoring draw is on the card, with the 1-1 our selected scoreline in the Correct Score market.
Pressure and rivalry could see the referee booking several players, with Declan Rice our pick as player to be shown a card.
