Finland v England betting preview
Finland currently sit rock bottom of the group with zero points to their name as they have lost all three matches played in this Nations League edition so far. They suffered a 0-3 defeat to Greece in the opening game, followed by a 0-2 loss to England a few days later. In their third outing last Thursday, the Finns were beaten 2-1 by Ireland at home, despite scoring the first goal The Finnish team could be on the back foot from the start against England, who defeated them 2-0 at Wembley last month, winning the shot count 22-2.
Interim manager Lee Carsley is already under pressure as England suffered a shocking 1-2 defeat at Wembley against Greece on Thursday. It felt like a huge blow to Carsley’s chances of succeeding Gareth Southgate on a full-time. That loss has left them with no room for error in Nations League Group B2. Carsley started his tenure with two convincing 2-0 wins over Ireland and Finland in September but the tactical mishap against the Greek national team was met with widespread criticism. The team appeared disorganised and not well balanced. Greece also had three disallowed goals and Levi Colwill's stunning goal-line heroics avoided a heavier defeat.
Best Odds
England are huge favourites to win in Helsinki at around 3/10 (1.30) with the best betting sites. Finland are best-priced at 11/1 (12.00) for victory while the draw is backable just below 5/1 (6.00).
Probable Line-ups
Finland (4-2-3-1): Hradecky; Stahl, Hoskonen, Ivanov, Galvez; Walta, Schuller; Lod, Kamara, Antman; Pohjanpalo.
Head coach Markku Kanerva has no fresh injury concerns as Sparta Prague midfielder Kaan Kairinen is the only absentee for the hosts. Up front, Norwich legend Teemu Pukki is in contention with Joel Pohjanpalo for the lone striker berth. Oliver Antman is an option to come in to bolster the home side's effectiveness going forward and we expect him to start in the offensive midfield trio alongside Robin Lod and Glen Kamara. Matti Peltola offers a more defensive alternative to reinforce midfield but the likes of Leo Walta and Rasmus Schuller are likely to anchor the midfield.
England (4-1-4-1): Pickford; Walker, Guehi, Stones, Colwill; Rice; Madueke, Gallagher, Bellingham, Palmer; Kane.
Lee Carsley has anticipated a return to a more conventional setup, whether captain Harry Kane is fit enough to start the game or not. The captain missed the Greece defeat with a minor injury suffered with Bayern Munich last weekend. One of Ollie Watkins or Dominic Solanke can expect to feature from the off, should Kane miss out. Kyle Walker, Marc Guehi, Conor Gallagher and Angel Gomes are also candidates to start. Bukayo Saka and Curtis Jones have withdrawn from the squad while Jack Grealish, who sit out against Greece, is now fully recovered. Uncapped full-back Tino Livramento and midfielder Curtis Jones will hope to make their first appearances for England.
Head To Head
These sides have only met on 12 previous occasions, with England undefeated over that time, claiming 10 victories (including last September's 2-0 win at Wembley Stadium).
Our Finland v England Betting Tips
Thursday was an absolute horror show from England and this match presents an excellent opportunity for the Three Lions to rebound.
Finland are experiencing one of their worst periods of the last two decades and have only beaten Estonia in this calendar year. Anything other than a convincing win this weekend would surely sound the definitive end of Carsley’s job chances.
We clearly back England to beat Finland but we do not expect an extremely high-scoring affair.
England's last 12 matches have all featured fewer than four goals so or recommended correct score bets are 2-0 and 3-0.
With Harry Kane doubtful, Cole Palmer becomes our pick in the anytime goalscorer market. It's time for the Chelsea star to shine tiwth the national team too.
