Chelsea v Manchester City Betting Preview
Chelsea enters the new season with a fresh start following their separation from manager Mauricio Pochettino, although the Blues won 10 of their last 12 home matches under the Argentine manager last term. Enzo Maresca became the club's fourth permanent managerial appointment since the takeover of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in May 2022. The Blues must address their defensive vulnerabilities that were exposed during a forgettable pre-season campaign. Losses to Celtic, Manchester City, and Real Madrid, along with draws against Wrexham and Inter Milan (courtesy of a last-gasp strike), highlight the challenges that lie ahead for Enzo Maresca's squad.
On the other hand, Manchester City aims to build upon their recent triumph in the Community Shield, where they displayed resilience by defeating rivals Manchester United on penalties. Regular time finished 1-1 (as we predicted here). Although their performance may not have matched their usual fluid style, Pep Guardiola's men showed the character required to succeed. With Savinho, who spent last season on loan at City's partner club Girona, as their sole summer signing, the Cityzens are determined to conquer the Premier League once again. They also start the season as odds-on favourite to win the Champions League. However, the departure of Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid for a significant fee leaves a void in City's lineup.
In previous encounters between these two teams, there have been thrilling draws. Last November at Stamford Bridge saw a 4-4 goal bonanza while February's match in Manchester ended in a 1-1 stalemate. However, City emerged victorious in April's FA Cup semi-final at Wembley with a late 1-0 win thanks to Bernardo Silva's decisive goal. Even during pre-season tours in the United States, City proved their dominance over Chelsea by triumphing in an entertaining 4-2 encounter.
Best Odds
Probable Line-ups
Chelsea (4-3-3): Sanchez; Gusto, Fofana, Colwill, Cucurella; Lavia, Caicedo, Fernandez; Madueke, Palmer, Nkunku
Chelsea will be without captain Reece James due to injury while Pedro Neto eagerly awaits his debut after completing a transfer from Wolves. Conor Gallagher finds himself training with the Under-21s as his potential move to Atletico Madrid hangs in the balance. Nicolas Jackson got his first minutes of pre-season against Inter Milan on Sunday but we expect Cristopher Nkunku to lead the line, supported by Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke. The likes of Marc Guiu, Mikhailo Mudrik and Raheem Sterling provide further offensive alternatives.
Manchester City (4-2-3-1): Ederson, Walker, Akanji, Dias, Gvardiol, B.Silva, Kovacic; Doku, De Bruyne, Foden; Haaland
Influential midfielder Rodri is sidelined due to injury sustained during Spain's Euros campaign while winger Oscar Bobb faces an extended period out due to a fractured fibula. Jack Grealish meanwhile is an injury doubt having missed the game at Wembley with a hamstring issue. On a positive note, new arrival Savinho eagerly anticipates his Premier League debut while John Stones, Kyle Walker and Phil Foden have returned to training this week after missing out on the Community Shield clash against Manchester United.
Our Chelsea v Manchester City Predictions
Entertainment should be almost guaranteed when Chelsea play Manchester City. The absence of Rodri is a huge blow for Man City, who struggled without his presence last season. On the other side, Chelsea have shown defensive weaknesses during pre-season matches by conceding two or more goals in four out of six outings which could pose challenges against Haaland
While it may take some time for Chelsea under Maresca's stewardship to find their rhythm; they have enough quality within their ranks to trouble Manchester City's defense and find the back of the net.
As a result, we back Man City to win & Both Teams To Score. A 3-1 scoreline in favour of the visitors is our pick in the Correct Score market.
