Located on Surrey's North Downs, Epsom Downs Racecourse is a Grade 1 racecourse and home to the world famous Epsom Derby.
The earliest recorded race days were in the 1640's with other notable races including the Oaks and Coronation Cup.
Epsom Downs is famous for thoroughbred flat racing. A traditional ‘downs’ course, Epsom Racecourse hosts a number of flat racing fixtures over the summer from the start of June to the end of September. The grandest of these is the 2-day Derby Festival in early June while the rest of the Epsom season consists of enjoyable evening racing and a popular bank holiday fixture in August. Another important Epsom Downs Racecourse horse racing event is held in April and include the Blue Riband Trial Stakes, the City and Suburban Handicap and the Great Metropolitan Handicap.
This oval-shaped course is two miles all the way around, which makes it one of the longest circuits in the UK. The track left handed, undulating. Horses need to handle the hills, turns and cambers, as this track tests every muscle.
Races up to eight and a half furlongs are very sharp, meaning those ridden prominently hold an advantage. The five-furlong course is pretty much downhill from start to finish and is known for being one of the fastest surfaces in the world.
