Novak Djokovic vs Nick Kyrgios betting preview
Novak Djokovic has played some imperious tennis during his two weeks at Wimbledon, but has also had several flat patches throughout the tournament.
The Serb has dropped the first set in each of his past two matches and came from 2-0 down against Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals. Djokovic also went 1-0 down against Cameron Norrie in the semifinal (2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4) but then dominated the match from this point onwards.
The former World No. 1 has won the Wimbledon tournament six times and his last defeat at SW19 came all the way back in 2017, when he retired midway through his quarter-final against Thomas Berdych with an injury.
He will be extra motivated to get his 21st Grand Slam title on Sunday, as a victory here would see him eclipse Roger Federer's tally and move him within just one victory of Rafa Nadal. And this could be his last chance of 2022 - Djokovic wasn’t able to compete in the Australian Open and in a number of events this year because of his decision to not get the COVID vaccine and he’ll likely miss out on the US Open due the same reason.
Novak Djokovic has been installed by the top UK betting sites as the heavy favourite to beat Nick Kyrgios in the Wimbledon final. The Serb is backable at 3/10 with bookmaker STS (licensed in the UK by the UKGC).
Nick Kyrgios received a walkover into the final since Rafael Nadal was forced to retire before the semifinal because of a stomach injury.
The controversial Aussie has played phenomenal tennis to arrive here, but he has also had a relatively lucky path, avoiding Matteo Berrettini (tested positive to COVID) and Rafa Nadal.
His best performances came in the quarter-final against Cristian Garin and in the second round against Filip Krajinovic. Kyrgios needed five sets to beat the unheralded Paul Jubb in the first round. He also was below par against Brandon Nakajima in the last-16 round but managed to win in 5 sets (4-6, 6-4, 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-2), showing a remarkable mental power and hitting an incredible 35 aces.
Despite that, the Canberran is playing his best tennis ever, having won won 21 out of 27 matches so far this season. He is also well-rested after earning a bye to the final, and probably he may never have a better shot at seizing a maiden Grand Slam.
Victory for Kyrgios - priced at 18/5 with 10Bet - would see him become the first Australian Grand Slam singles champion since Lleyton Hewitt won the grasscourt Major 20 years back in 2002.
Head To Head
Despite Kyrgios having been on the tour as a professional since 2012, the pair have only ever played each other twice, both in 2017 (Acapulco and Indian Wells). Surprisingly, Kyrgios leads 2-0 against the Serb. Moreover, the Canberran has never dropped a set to Djokovic in their two meetings.
Novak Djokovic vs Nick Kyrgios predictions
Djokovic will be participating in his 32nd Grand Slam final while Kyrgios has never appeared in a Grand Slam final so far. There's a huge gulf in experience in favour of the world number 3 but there are many reasons to believe Kyrgios will be capable of giving the Serb a run for his money.
Will the extra break mean the world No. 40 is fresher than Djokovic? Will the Aussie's big serve make the difference, as it happened both times these two players met in 2017?
We expect a hard fought final as Kyrgios' serve will surely trouble Djokovic. The Serb didn't look unbeatable as in previous editions but ultimately the mental edge over Kyrgios could give him a five-setter victory. We back Djokovic to win in five sets.
