TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 1 BETTING PREVIEW
Stage 1 is a pan-flat 13,2 km route that featuree at least 16 corners. The first 8.5 kilometres with few turns and long straights favour the pure time triallists.
The second part has plenty of twists and turns on narrow streets, something that will not be too favourable for the time-trial specialists.
Despite that, the attention will mostly be on the time-trialists who will be battling for the first stage win and the Yellow Jersey.
Stage 1 Favourites
The riders will start the Tour by heading down the time trial start ramp one by one to tackle a circuit within the city that will take them past Tivoli Gardens and the Little Mermaid.
ITT World Champion Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) is the favorite number one despite competing in the Tour De France for the first time ever. He won the ITT World Championships in the last two years, and five ITT stages in the 2020 and 2021 Giro d’Italia. The Ineos rider has also won time trial stages in this year’s Tirreno-Adriatico and Criterium du Dauphine earlier this season.
Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) looks the most likely rider to challenge the Italian champion, having finished runner-up to Ganna in the 2020 and 2021 World Championships. The Belgian won the second ITT stage in last year’s race just like the ITT in the 2022 Paris-Nice.
Another time trial specialist is Stefan Bissegger (EF Education-EasyPost), who won the ITT stages in last year’s Paris-Nice and Benelux Tour. The 23-year-old cyclist also got the win in the time trial at the 2022 UAE Tour where he managed to beat Ganna and Pogacar.
Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) and Rohan Dennis (Jumbo-Visma) are also specialist with Top 3 ambitions in Stage 1. The former is a two-time ITT European Champion and finished second in last year’s first time-trial stage at the Tour. The latter is past his prime but still capable to produce stunning performances, expecially when not fatigued from previous days.
Dark Horses?
All-rounders like Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) or Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) are also expected to perform well. Their main objective will be to lose few seconds from the winner and try to wear the Yellow Jersey in the next stages.
Geraint Thomas won the opening stage of the TdF the last time it started with an ITT. He will be in the main contenders again as well as other GC contenders such as Tadej Pogacar, Primoz Roglic and Jonas Vingegaard.
Don't rule out Kasper Asgreen. He is a three-time national time trial champion and finished 4th in last year's World Championship. He knows these streets better than any other rider and could be a top contender
Mads Pedersen could be another surprise package of the day.
