- Written by David Bet
Tour De France Stage 10, a 187.3 km run from Orléans to Saint-Amand-Montrond, is a fairly flat stage and, on paper, another day for the sprinters. However, in the last 60 kilometers, the riders will ride across fairly open terrain, and the wind in this region can sometimes blow hard. Who will win the stage? TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 10 BETTING PREVIEW
There isn’t a single categorised climb all day, and the total elevation gain of under 1,000m is the lowest of any stage this whole edition.
Wind is the only factor that could derail the sprinters' plans. With three direction changes in the final 30km, crosswinds and echelons are a real threat.
The last time the Tour finished in Saint-Amand-Montrond in 2013, Alejandro Valverde (one of the GC contenders) lost 10 minutes in echelons and the stage was a mess in general. Mark Cavendish won the sprint from the first group of only 8 riders that day.
Moreover, there a super-sketchy series of corners inside the final kilometer. Hence, if crosswind do not break the race into echelons, positioning and avoiding crashes will be pivotal.
Stage 10 Favourites
Biniam Girmay is objectively the best sprinter of the race so far. Two years ago won the Gent-Wewelgem, a Belgian Classic in wich crosswinds are very frequent. This could also be the day in which Jasper Philipsen – who is winless so far this year after winning four stages and the green jersey in last year's edition – finally breaks through in this year’s Tour.
Of course, Mark Cavendish will aim to win for the second time in Saint-Amand-Montrond. He is a master in crosswinds and, in case of bunch sprint, he is experienced and brave enough to position himself perfectly.
Dylan Groenewegen has been impressive in Dijon and could have marked this stage with a dot. If he is in the right position in the final 300 meters. he can be the second sprinter to win the second of the race.Arnaud De Lie has four top-five finishes, including two thirds, and can't be overlooked. Fernando Gaviria could be in the mix too while Pascal Ackermann looked really good on Sunday and is definetely improving day by day.
Dark horses?
Alexander Kristoff is another rider that can deliver surprising performance on his best days while San Bennett, Phil Bauhaus, Bryan Coquard, and Fabio Jakobsen will have a top 3 placement as their maximum target.
Wout Van Aert and Mathieu Van Der Poel have bigger goals in mind and we do not expect them taking any risk here.
Other possible dark horses are Marijn Van Den Berg, Gerben Thijssen, Arnaud Demare and stage 9 winner Anthony Turgis.
