TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 12 BETTING PREVIEW
The 165.1 kilometres race kicks off in Briançon, with the Col du Galibier (23km at 5.1%) climbed by the easier south side compared to Wednesday's climb.
Then, the riders will continue to retrace the stage 11 route by going in the opposite direction, until they reach Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne at kilometre 80.5 and that’s where the Col de la Croix de Fer (29km at 5.25) begins.
Following a descent of almost 30km, the rider will reach Bourg d’Oisans. The town sits as the base of the 13.8 kilometres road climbing Alpe d’Huez. This legendary climb is 13.8km long, has a 8.1% gradient and features 21 hairpins.
The hardest ramp at 11.5% appears with almost 4 kilometres remaining. Here the Stage, and eventually the Tour, will be decided.
A win for a brave attacker ore a GC contender are the two possible scenarios, and much will depend on how the race went on the Col Du Granon the day before.
Interestingly, this stage is the exact replica of 1986 Stage 18 when Hinault and LeMond crossed the finish riding with hands clasped. That year, the most decisive action happened on a downhill—specifically, down the Télégraphe.
Stage 12 Favourites
Should the 21 turns of L’Alpe d’Huez see GC riders also fighting for the stage win, Tadej Pogaçar clearly is the red hot favorites as the Slovenia will fight to reclaim the Yellow Jersey.
The Slovenian will have the current leader Jonas Vingegaard, Adam Yates and Romain Bardet as main contenders while Geraint Thomas, who won on the Alpe d'Huez in 2018 on his way to win the Tour de France, can't be ruled out.
Other GC contenders such as David Gaudu, Primoz Roglic, Enric Mas, Nairo Quintana and Alexandr Vlasov will only have chances to win the stage by anticipating the big guns.
Dark horses?
Since it is Bastille Day, French riders are likely to be very active.
Thibaut Pinot is the main candidate for a glory day, while other possible breakaway riders are Warren Barguil, Pierre Latour, Pierre Rolland and Benoit Cosnefroy.
Other strong climbers with chance to succeed are Michael Storer, Ion Izaguirre, Bauke Mollema, Michael Woods and Jakob Fuglsang.
Brave punters might also be attracted by long shots such as Patrick Konrad, Dylan Teuns, Carlos Verona, Giulio Ciccone, Tim Wellens and Fred Wright while other riders from Team Jumbo-Visma, Ineos and UAE Emirates (such as Dani Martinez, Dylan Van Baarle, Rafal Majka, Steven Kruijswijk, Sepp Kuss, Tiesj Benoot and Brandon McNulty) are exected to help their captains rather than lokk for personal glory..
