TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 14 BETTING PREVIEW
A tough day in the Alps for the peloton. With five categorised climbs before the descend to Morzine and an elevation gain of almost 4,300 metres, there will be plenty of action both from breakaway specialists and GC riders.
The ascents on the menu are the following:
- Col de Saxel (4.2 kilometres at 4.6%)
- Col de Cou (7 kilometres at 7,4%)
- Col du Feu (5.8 kilometres at 7.8%)
- Col de Jambaz (6.8 kilometres at 3.8%)
- Col de Ramaz (13.9 kilometres at 7.1%)
- Col de Joux Plane (11.6 kilometres at 8.5%)
The second half of the Col de Joux Plane has a constant double digits gradient. From its summit there is a 12 kilometres technical descend to the finish line..
Stage 14 Favourites
As usual, there are two probable scenarios - a successful breakaway or a GC contenders showdown on the final climb.
Tadej Pogacar's teammates have burned a lot of energies on Friday - only to gain eight seconds - and they would not be able to control the race.
Team Jumbo Visma has the potential to keep things tight, expecially if they think the profile of the stage will suit Jonas Vingegaard rather than Pogaçar. Anyway, the Slovenian has gained seconds in all the last three mountain stages and this could have a mental impact on the current yellow jersey.
Should a breakaway fail to succeed, it will be a battle between the first two riders in the overall standings, with Tadej Pogaçar slightly favourite.
No other GC contenders can think to earn seconds over the duo in a direct confrontation. Riders such as Jai Hindley, Pello Bilbao, Carlos Rodriguez, Simon Yates, Tom Pidcock and David Gaudu are unlikely to have enough freedom to escape and can't keep the pace of the Pogaçar-Vingegaard duo.
Sepp Kuss and Adam Yates looked brilliant but they will basically help their respective captain rather than chase personal glory.
Any interesting long shot?
Naturally, there are many riders that could have targeted this hugh mountain stage. We would rule out those who gave their 100% in Friday's breakaway, including the winner Michal Kwiatkowski and the unner up Maxim Van Gils.
Pure climbers such as Dani Martinez, Ion Izagirre, Andrey Amador, Michael Woods and Esteban Chaves are those we keep an eye on.
Other riders such as Tobias Johannessen, Matteo Jorgenson, Giulio Ciccone, Felix Gall, Georg Zimmermann, Thibaut Pinot, Mattias Skjelmose, Woet Poels, Hugo Houle, Bob Jungels and Patrick Konrad should not be underestimated.
Mikel Landa, Julian Alaphilippe, Rigoberto Uran, Ben O'Connor, Egan Bernal and Rui Costa are far from their best from and can't be overlooked.
