TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 17 BETTING PREVIEW
Stage 17 is the shortest mountain stage of the Tour but it promises to be an epic day.
The riders tackle one category 2 climb and three climbs in the 1st category, all in the last 76km. To pep things up the last 500 metres rise at 13% to the line.
The first 53km are flat before the first-category Col d'Aspin (12km, 6.5%) begins.
After the Aspin the riders continue to the Hourquette d’Ancizan (8.2 kilometres at 5.1%) and Col de Val-Louron-Azet (10.7 kilometres at 6.8%), the perfect curtain raisers for a final assault on the runway at Peyragudes (8km, 7.8%).
The final climb will see a huge battle between top riders in the General Classification. The first kilometre averages 9%, then it levels out to 6% before the last 500 metres are insane with an average gradient of 13%, with a brief section reaching 16%.
How the race unfolds depends on the GC contenders. The stage is short and can be easily controlled but a breakaway of strong climbers (riders that have saved their legs on Tuesday) can succeed as well.
Stage 17 Favourites
Should the GC contenders keep the breakaway under control, Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard will battle for the Yellow Jersey and for the stage win too.
The likes of Nairo Quintana, Adam Yates, Geraint Thomas, David Gaudu, Louis Meintjes and Enric Mas are well behind the two leaders, but they could decide to anticipate their attacks on the penultimate climb.
Romain Bardet and Alexandr Vlasov didn't look brilliant on Tuesday and we expect them to struggle on the Peyragudes.
Other contenders?
Who will be fresher than GC contenders?
The likes of Giulio Ciccone, Tom Pidcock, Bauke Mollema, Alberto Bettiol, Thibaut Pinot and Rigoberto Uran were sursprisingly quiet in Stage 16, and this could be a sign that they have targeted this stage.
Other possible attackers could be Mattia Cattaneo, Matej Mohoric, Pierre Rolland, Chris Froome, Andreas Leknessund, Nick Schultz, Luis Leon Sanchez and Michael Matthews but their chances to win the stage are much slimmer.
Other riders such as Dylan Teuns, Damiano Caruso, Valentin Madouas, Matteo Jorgenson, Hugo Houle, Michael Storer, Michael Woods and Gorka Izagirre are suited for this kind of stages but they should be extremely fatigued after their breakaway on Tuesday.
Lennard Kamna abandoned the Tour due to a persistent cold.
