TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 17 BETTING PREVIEW
Stage 17 is perhaps the queen stage of this edition with more than 5,400 meters of elevation gain and four categorised climbs on the menu:
- Col des Saisies (1st category, 13,4 km at 5.1%)
- Cormet de Roselend (1st category, 19,9 km at 6%)
- Cote de Longefoy(2nd category, 6,6 km at 7.5%)
- Col de la Loze (HC, 28,1 km at 6%)
The final ascent, Col de la Loze, will take the riders all the way up at 2304 meters of altitude, and will host the Souvenir Henri Desgrange at the summit.
The first half of this beast is nothing special but the final 10.2 kilometers have 8.5% average gradient, with sections up to 20% near the finish.
The Col de la Loze crests with 6.5 kilometers to go, with a short descent leading to the Courchevel altiport and a hilltop finish with ramps at 18%.
Is Pogacar able to bounce back after the ITT blow? Can UAE control the breakaway and cause problems to Jumbo Visma team?
Stage 17 Favourites
Tadej Pogaçar is 1.48 minutes in arrears after the time-trial. Of course, the Slovenian is not the kind of rider that gives up and will fight until the last stage. Until now he has never dropped Vingegaard significantly, so he needs to change tactics. Probably he will not wait for the final kilometer of the final ascent, as he has done so far. Will it be enough to drop the yellow jersey?
Jonas Vingegaard has been dominant in the time-trial, has gained 1 minute on the Slovenian in one of the first mountain stages and has limited the gaps every time Pogaçar attacked him. With a better preparation compared to his main rival, the third week might be easier than the first two for the Dane. We expect him to run on the defensive but he will surely ready to take advantage of any Pogaçar's struggle on the final ascent or tactical error/gamble.
Among the GC contenders, only Carlos Rodriguez looks able to take advantage of an eventual man-to-man marking as he did last week.
The likes of Pello Bilbao, Felix Gall, Simon Yates, Guillaume Martin and David Gaudu need to anticipate the moves of the leading duo and create a relevant gap, something very hard to achieve if UAE decides to make the race hard.
Dark horses? Winning escapee?
It will be a hard day for attackers but a successful breakaway can't be ruled out. With so much fatigue in the legs, only in-form riders and the ones that have saved energies in the first two weeks have a chance to get the stage win.
Wout Poels emerged triumphant from a breakaway on stage 15 and is one of the possible contenders, alongside Giulio Ciccone (who only pushed on the climb on Tuesday's ITT), Mattias Skjelmose, Mikel Landa, Michael Woods, Michal Kwiatkowski and Tom Pidcock.
We also expect one between Rafal Majka and Adam Yates to be involved in the breakaway. They will escape mainly to support an eventual attack of their captain Tadej Pogaçar, but if the Slovenian doesn't manage to drop Vingegaard both Majka and Adam Yates have the potential to go all alone to the finish line.
Other possible attackers?
Take a look at Dylan Teuns, Ion Izaguirre, Matteo Jorgenson, Tobias Johannessen, Thibaut Pinot, Jonathan Castoviejo, Ben O'Connor, Krists Neilands, Maxim Van Gils, Mathieu Burgadeu, Pierre Latour and Jack Haig.
