TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 17 BETTING PREVIEW
Wednesday's stage will be more of an aperitif ahead of meatier courses from tomorrow and until the end of the third week.
It will be likely won by a rider from the breakaway, with further minor skirmishes breaking out in the GC group further back.
The stage starts with a run-up of 130 kilometres that climbs 800 metres. A large breakaway group will likely be formed with its riders looking for a chance to shine.
The three climbs in the final 40 kilometers are not extremely demanding.
The Col Bayard, (6.8km at 7.3%) should sort out who is going to be in the front group although the final selection should be made on the Col du Noyer (7.5km at 8.4%) just 12 kilometres from the finish line, and a time bonus sprint at the top.
The route ends with a new climb for the Tour, the Côte de SuperDévoluy (3.8km at 5.9%).
As we mentioned, we believe a breakaway will succeed here, although there could be a bit of action also from the GC contenders.
Stage 17 Favourites
The ideal profile, of course, is a rider that can climb, out of the Top 10 of the General Classification, relatively fresh and unexposed so far.
Ben Healy has seemed to be one of the most brilliant riders and the final to Wednesday's stage could set up perfectly for the Irishman. He cam close to win Stage 9 and was among the attackers in Stage 11, 14 and 15.
Richard Carapaz has been part of two 140km-plus breaks already on this Tour, showing that his legs are not that bad.
Jay Hindley was also part of the breakaway which spent almost 170km clear of the peloton on Sunday’s brutal stage 15 up to Plateau de Beille.
Talking about breakaway, Tobias Johannesen is a specialist, although he is yet to win a stage at the Tour. Uno-X Mobility also have Magnus Cort in their team of riders and may choose to send him up the road too.
Dark horses? Winning escapee?
Stevie Williams has been underwhelming so far, but this route surely suite to the winner of this year Flèche Wallonne.
Enric Mas and Simon Yates have the skills to be a contender here, as well as Romain Bardet, Michal Kwiatkowski, Romai Gregoire and Neilson Powless.
Other possible attackers that could upset the odds are Kevin Vauquelin, Oier Lazkano, Davide Formolo, Laurens De Plus, Guillaime Martin, Nico Denz, David Gaudu, Louis Meintjes, and Frank Van Den Broek.
Mathieu Van Der Poel and Wout Van Aert are expected to remain with their own captains, as Jasper Philipsen only trails Biniam Girmay by 32 points in the green jersey battle, while Jonas Vingegaard will try to caapitalise every occasion he has in order to reduce the gap from Tadej Pogaçar in the GC.
