TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 18 BETTING PREVIEW
Yesterday we predicted first, second and third - Richard Carapaz, Simon Yates and Enric Mas, bashing the bookies like never before!
Thursday's stage is a up-and-down route with 3,100 metres of elevation gain that includes five categorised climbs:
Col du Festre (3.9km at 6.3%), cat. 3, km 32.2
Côte de Corps (2.1km at 7.2%), cat. 3, km 57.5
Col de Manse (5.1km at 3.6%), cat. 3, km 97.3
Côte de Saint-Apollinaire (7km at 5.5%), cat. 3, km 121
Côte des Demoiselles Coiffées (3.6km at 5.4%), cat. 3, km 139.1
The last climb crests with 40 kilometers to go, rolling roads, with a very gradual uphill pitch flattening out over the last 10km.
Punchy riders will relish the thoughts of the five ascents, particularly as the severity is not necessarily significant enough to pitch the odds definitively in the favor of GC contenders and pure climbers.
Furthermore, since the following two stage will push riders them over all high Alpine peaks, it’s likely the GC contenders will save their energy for that.
Stage 18 Favourites
Wout Van Aert and Mathieu Van Der Poel are expected to have the green light from their captain to chase the stage win and they are likely to renew their rivalry on Thursday. The stage profile looks ideal for both of them.Ben Healy missed the winning breakaway on Wednesday but was one of the most active riders in the first half of the stage.
His teammate Richard Carapaz was exhausted after winning the stage and may decide to have a quiet day as well as other attackers such as Stephen Williams, Cristophe Laporte, Romain Gregoire and Simon Yates.
The current green jersey Biniam Girmay could have targeted this stage, both to earn more points and get his 4th stage win at this Tour. Of course, Jasper Philipsen will follow him but the route is suited to Girmay.
Matej Mohoric has been very quiet so far but we expect at least one attmept from this formidable rider, and Thursday's stage could be the right one.
Magnus Cort is another rider that can perform well on this kind of routes, as well as Paul Lapeira, Axel Laurance, Jasper Stuyven and Anthony Turgis, who has already won a stage in impressive fashion this year.
Dark horses?
Breakaway specialists or fast finisseurs with good climbing skills are what we would look for.
The likes of Oier Lazkano, Toms Skujins, Krisyts Neilands, Oscar Onley, Victor Campenaerts, Tobias Johannesen, and Valentin Madouas belong to the first category while riders such as Danny Van Poppel, Michael Matthews, and Alex Aranburu belong to the second category.
If you are looking for a long shot, you have plenty of options to choose from!
